Hi

I have a 51 reg Seat Leon Cupra with circa 54K miles on it.

Today I noticed a metallic knocking noise that seemed to be coming from the driver's front side whenever I went over a bump or uneven road surface.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

could be a bushing/droplinks/top mount/wheel bearing/shocker

bushing would be my first bet, either the wishbone arm or ARB

Most likely the bushes on the suspension, or could possibly be some freeplay elsewhere in the system. Is there any freeplay in the steering wheel?

Not really any freeplay in the wheel... If it is bushes- is it expensive and can I fix it myself?

Thanks

Depends, I don't really know much about Seats, so it could be an easy job, or it could be really awkward. Hopefully someone else will come along and give you more help.

I have this as well, they checked everything (twice) and they couldnt find it. They even changed the suspension arm etc and they could not locate the problem. They 100% assured me though that it whatever it was it did not effect the engine, suspension, steering etc, as they were all in perfect condition.

It only happens for a few minutes after cold start then disappears...

I will wait until the first year's service and get them to check again.

You are imagining it. This is a low mileage vehicle and as such will not have suffered any suspension wear.

Fox that is very patronising to tell me I am imagining it... I can assure you I am not.

That post by fox was tongue in cheek - i.e. referencing the fact that people always want a car with less mileage (or spec me a car threads where they say "find me a powerful car, turbo - must have less than 80k on the clock") when people should really be checking for condition and in reality pretty much ignoring the mileage.

Do I get a cookie?

Metallic knocking noise?

How about a loose heat shield or a loose exhaust bracket?

Mileage doesn't seem high enough for ARB, drop links, bushes etc, and in any event, they would make a dull knocking noise but not a 'metallic' metal on metal type knocking noise.

Get a car up on ramp and see what's loose or what's rusted away.

So its not old/high mileage enough for anything to be worn out but you want to know whats rusted away?. I'd put money on it being a droplink...hell, i've put clutch/flywheel kits in newer Golfs with less miles...
