So I bought this PSU: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-026-OC when I thought my PSU had gone, but after trying everything I never managed fixed my computer- so I went ahead and ordered a new system minus a PSU.

I ordered a Asus P5K EPU Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard along with a Q6600: will a 20+4pin still work? I was reading around saying that it will work but may cause problems. Is this true? I don't mind ordering a new one at some point, maybe come the end of the month but would this PSU do me until then?

Should work with no probs, most newer PSU have a 20+4 pin configuration so that you can still use it on a 20 pin mobo by detaching the extra 4 pins.

That PSU id fine for your new board, The 20pin + 4pin allows you to use the psu on older boards that require 20 pin ATX connector.
Not sure if the board will boot with only 20 pin.

I hopefully understood your question :)

To clarify my new board has 24pins, my new PSU (and old one actually) has 20pins plus a seperate cable with 4pins.

I was just wondering if I were to plug the 20pin connector into the 24pin slot it will still work, or if I should plug the extra cable with 4pins also.

i will work if you put it to the far left.. but you won't beable to standby from windows

Arghh, i've already spent close to £1000 already. Looks like I might need to fork out some more. Any recommendations on something cheap but decent? like <£60

Sorry mate, the power supply in your original post, is what your using at the moment?
If yes, then that should have the 24 pin ATX connector plus the 4 pin to supply the cpu power, the extra 4 pin on the main ATX connector can removed to enable it to work on older boards.

IT WILL WORK FINE.

THE PSU HAS A 20+4 PIN CONNECTOR AND A SEPERATE 4 PIN CPU CONNECTOR.

Sorry guys, I just noticed this now when I took the case out- I feel like a right spaz.

I totally didn't notice the extra 4pins semi-attached when I was frantically trying to get my old computer to work again!
