Keeping the tank half full.

If £15 takes it to half way then your car has a very small petrol tank. I cant imagine you are saving anything whatsoever by doing that. You are just wasting your own time.

It makes a small difference, less than a mpg i'd imagine.

I just can't be bothered to get out all my physics textbooks to prove it.

And the car is 800Kg with a 45L tank.

You joke, but ive done that ever since then (and actually used it once on the motorway when i was running really low and missed the services, i put it in as a precaution on the hard shoulder as i was convinced that i wouldnt make it without it to the next services) :)

i wasnt, i was being serious :p

i used to carry a 5 litre one and had a spare tenner in the car incase i ever ran out and forgot my wallet etc. don't really need it now since i dont travel further than 60 miles a day.

I literally run it right down and then full it right up. This has the added bonus of driving the girlfriend absolutely spare. Especially if I give her a commentry.

'21 miles left!' 'We're down to 3 miles! Are we going to make it to the petrol station!'.

It's hilarious, as she ALWAYS fills up when it gets half full because she is scared of running out :D

I rolled into the Shell garage in Portsmouth on Saturday on 0 miles  It took 69.98 litres of VPower.

I recall the time my father found out that when his e39's fuel computer reads Zero, its is not telling porkies like his previous Fords used to! :D

1500 litres or 20 makes sod all difference to an HGV and I doubt full tank or empty makes that much difference in a car, certainly nothing to get upset about.

Remember location of shell garages, plan route so that i can fill up at one when ill need >40L of fuel.

Drive round, brim tank, get drivers club points, be happy. :)

How many willing to own up to running out of petrol when sailing close to the wind? I'm very much in the run it beyond the red camp but have run out just twice in my car life. A few times I've known I've gone a bit too far and drive at a constant 56mph to the nearest garage, it's a kind of sixth sense. With me its that I simply put off things which are not essential for as long as possible, like any proper british man, thinking that the extra 5 minutes saved could be used elsewhere for worthwhile things like watching telly or scratching myself.

Is it true that diesels need to be "bled" after fully running out of fuel? (as Jeremy Clarkson claimed whilst doing the Edinburgh -> London challenge).

I would be much more up for driving with a 15 mile (and less) range if I didn't think I would have to pay for repairs as well as fuel.

I've run out of fuel twice in the navara - it has a pump think to pump back up the air pressure. Takes about 1 min from opening bonnet to closing

What I find really funny is people who go out specifically to 'get petrol'.

Why?! Just.. call in on your way too or from somewhere. My gran gets up every Saturday and drives out to specifically get.. some petrol.

lol

:o I do this sometimes if I'm bored in the evening and fancy a quick blast, I go the long way to/from the petrol station. Never when it's half empty though, and always brimmed. In case that makes it any better :D

Yes, sometimes you can get past it by just continually cranking but generally they do need to be bled.

No idea if this is still the case with modern diesels mind you.

Yes, (again :p)

My old 205 you didn't need to bleed..

However I know of atleast two machines at work (with diesel engines) that are an absolute ***** to get going again if they run out of diesel,

you need to crack the injectors and mess about for ages... so its not worth trying :p although I bet more modern engines are fine.

I played petrol station roulette the other week due to boredom in the other half's car. I got to the last service station on that section of the A1 before the junction I wanted to come off on with a 0 miles tank range displayed and decided to try and make it to Team Valley on principal. That was all well and good until approx 2 miles later when I came over the brow of a hill to find stationary traffic! The last few miles were 'interesting' :D

My fuel gauge is mental when it gets low so I just fill up every 300-320miles. You can get in it and it'll say a quarter left. As soon as you drive past the last petrol station before getting on the motorway (it knows where the petrol stations are I'm sure) the light comes on and it's showing bone dry. :p

Modern Scania trucks will simply auto-bleed whilst cranking, DAF's and some Mercs need a spanner monkey.....

LOL at the body builders, how about you all become a skinny runt like me, all that muscle you are carrying around must slow you down more! :D

I used to fill up half way, although there are about 3 petrol stations on the way home there is generally a queue and I just can't be bothered. So I now fill up 3/4. :p

Skinny runt? No thanks :p
All mine definitely does slow me down. I'm far far too heavy to be a racer hehe

I have a hatred of petrol stations, don't know why but because of this I will run it down and fill to the top everytime. If I get below 1/4 and i'm going a long way i'll fill up otherwise I will fill up when I'm passing a station with <50miles in the tank.
