Want a good replacement CD player with USB connectivity (at rear - I'll put a cable to the glove box).

Don't need IPod or Blue Tooth, just good sound and good controls...

Say £100-140?

A couple I've spotted which look great (eg: Sony) aren't even USB2?

I've recently got a Pioneer unit, and am impressed at the sound quality, and ease of use. It has USB and AUX in, full iPod control, but this can also be used on a regular hard drive. Mine is the DEH-P7000UB, and was bought for £160, but there are a couple of lesser models a bit cheaper with possibly a few less features, but the overall sound quality seems to be similar.

Little bit too much... The Pioneer 6000UB would be in my price range. Just wary about paying for IPod stuff I'll never use...

Have you played stuff from a USB stick? Do you know if it's USB2?

Don't know  - If I have say X hundred tracks on a USB dongle just concerned about access speed of the files/directories...

I think you will find a unit without usb2 functionality is more than capable of scrolling through hundreds of folders.. I could understand if it was for video but you won't have a problem at all with audio.

I realise it's a bit much for you - that's why I suggested the lower models... ;)

tbh, even if you don't use the iPod bit, you can still use the folder structure for a hard drive/external player, so it's well worth it.

AFAIK, it's not USB2 (not sure if any units are), but can double-check on the box when I get home.

I have X thousand tracks on my iPod and it's pretty much instant access - I think USB2 would be overkill tbh...

And just a regular USB dongle (ie, not an iPod)?

A couple of the Sony units look great, but they all have the USB ports on the front :(

Do you mean just a memory stick? or a USB 'stick' MP3 player? I could have a go tonight if it would be of any help...

I'd just be plugging in a standard memory stick (or USB hard drive).

I'm wondering two main things:-
1) How easy is it to navigate files/directories on the unit?
2) Out of interested does it sort the files alphabetically? Older units used to just show files unsorted in date order (ie: they order they were placed on the USB device). Ideally you want them in some sort of sorted order (eg: just alphabetical).

ps: I believe yours is USB2 (as the Pioneer DEH-P6000UB is USB2).
