Setanta Sports are pleased to announce that highlights of the Croatia v England World Cup qualifying game will be shown free-to-air at 11.30pm on Setanta Sports 1 on Wednesday evening.
Highlights of the big game, along with the best of Scotland’s World Cup qualifier with Iceland, will be shown after Setanta’s live broadcasts of the matches.
The free-to-air match highlights will be available to the 21 million British homes that can receive digital televison via Freeview, BT Vision, Tiscali, or satellite – satellite channel 423 and Freeview channel 34.
Setanta’s decision to broadcast the highlights programmes free-to-air was taken after the breakdown of negotiations with terrestrial broadcasters that had expressed an interest in the highlights rights.
Regretfully, Setanta did not receive offers that reflected the commercial value of its investment in the rights to the games involving England and Scotland.
Trevor East, director of sport at Setanta, said: “Setanta always wanted as many football fans as possible to be able to watch tonight’s Croatia v England World Cup qualifying match.
"We always intended to make highlights available, and were disappointed that we were unable to reach agreement with any of the terrestrial broadcasters.
"This was not due to any lack of willingness on our part: we have been able to strike highlights deals in Wales and Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, none of the terrestrial broadcasters who expressed an interest in the England game offered us a fair market price.
“We are delighted that we have been able to find a solution to this problem with our own free-to-air highlights programmes. A lot of people had to move quickly to make this happen and I would like to thank them for their efforts. We hope football fans enjoy tonight’s games.”

Good on them. They've been unfairly blamed for terrestial telly not wanting to pay for an England highlights package.

I think they put a prohibitive price tag on the highlightsa package cos they didn't actually want to sell them

Not really, unlike the BBC and Sky they can't take a loss on one product to make a profit on another(or not much anyway). They didn't pay massively more for the rights to the games afaik, and they aren't asking massively more than they have had to pay for similar rights going the other way, or anything more/less than sky/bbc end up paying each other. Both the BBC and Sky were taking the "we're bigger than you so will bully you and pay less" stance and failed, so good on Setanta. I still get angry we pay for the BBC when theres nothing they produce I want to watch.

I don't understand why people mock Setanta, we've subscribed to them for years and more than happy with the range of football they show (household of Celtic fans + myself the odd one out, a Falkirk bairn)

One gripe is their low bitrate, would be nice to see some HD...

It's the FA's fault for not having the fans in mind. Money grabbing pillocks. Not Setanta's fault for bidding high, not BBC's fault for not bidding enough.

Still, kudos to Sentanta for giving free highlights.

England should always be on terrestrial TV. Unlike club teams which are basically supported by minorities, our nation is England so thus the majority support them and you shouldn't have to pay £10+ a month to watch them play on TV.

I don't blame Setanta, I blame the FA.

I'm on holiday in wales...would sky 423 be the channel to watch or is there some regional channel I need to watch to see the england highlights?

Agreed 100%

At first they were a pretty shoddy outfit, low bit rate and 4:3 transmissions, with terrible low-budget commentators, few cameras at the matches and poor cameramen.

As they've got more footie they have invested and got some good commentators, decent number of cameras and a more professional setup. Bitrate is still too low for my liking, but they are slowly getting there.

I have Virgin Media and now get St Tampa free and it is one of the best packages on the service. I watch it far more than I watch Sky Sports and I pay through the nose for that package.

It has become a bit of a joke to make sure you get all the football, you have subscribe to skysports and setanta and make sure you dont miss the odd game on BBC, its all over the place.

Its made slightly easily now because the BBC don't have any live football this season.
