This made me chuckle...

http://www.whatcar.com/car-review-readers.aspx?RT=710

I was so looking forward to owning a 330d. I took an extensive test drive over various road conditions, the weather was perfect, and concluded that:

- great engine; the manual gearbox was very notchy between 1st and 2nd but this may be due to the car was relatively new;
- the car really tramlined over any imperfections when travelling at normal speed, really made the car feel nervous - I would not like to drive this car when conditions get difficult; the faster you go the less the effect of this trait; I wonder if this is due to run flat tyres?
- the centre console obstructs the use of the handbrake badly that you have to contort your arm to use it effectively - bad design!
- wonderfully accurate steering but too heavy for my liking.

In summary, I was very disappointed (especially by the tramlining) by the experience overall especially how the press rave about BMWs.

Is that how the BMW drivers driving fast? :p

Steering too heavy? I wouldn't listen to that persons opinion tbh, the steering is very nicely weighted in the E46, steering is probably the best part of the car it's brilliant.

The review is of an E90 but my Dad always goes on about how great the steering is in his E90.

So somebody on another website thinks a 330d on RFT's tramlines.

Why did you share this with us? Are you expecting the BMW owners to bite or something?

Yes, tramlining is caused by the runflat tyres.

Also, some people mistake steering feel and feedback for tramlining. Usually people who are used to driving VWs or Audis or women's shopping cars with feather light steering..

Because he found it amusing. I don't think there's any need to take it as being a dig at BMW owners

Further to my earlier post my Dad owned Audi's for around 10years solid before getting the E90 and thinks it's a much better car and such rewarding to drive (not that he drives it hard or clocks up many miles).

So I guess you could be correct in what you say, perhaps it's just more responsive than that guy likes. Which is fair enough and he should spend his cash elsewhere.

This is a bit of a random thread really

most peoples comment on the e90 is the LACK of steering feel :p But that's compared to older bmws (i did notice it, as did Beepcake from speaking to him when he test drove the 335i whilst he owned the m5) and ive read it a fair few times. It is still quite a lot better than most cars though i spose

Not really. The BMW owners are known for driving fast so this customer's review could explain why they are driving fast to get rid of tramlining! ;)

BMW's are rubbish the press have it wrong. Roderick Cheung is the man in the know as his sage like road test shows. No flys on him.....which is odd as I suspect he smells of turds. To be fair the steering is heavy compared to some cars and if the car was a bit out of kilter or he was more used to a car with Rich Tea specials and no feel then he might have found it too much to handle but in the grand scale of things his is just another opinion like everyone elses and hardly something I would personally uphold as something worth passing comment on.........which is kind of ironic having just passed comment on it!
