Your motherboard would be fine for a GPU upgrade, however with the top end graphics cards i.e. 280/260GTX and 4870X2/4780 you might want to consider a motherboard with PCI-e 2.0 (such as a P45) as your P35 has only 1.1. However there are lots of people using the above cards on P35 chipsets that are happy as larry.

There is a small percentage decrease in performance something around 5% iirc, when using the faster cards on a P35.

no, leave your mobo. just wait awhile and get some money for a newer GPU and you ll be happy out.

i was planning on next month getting a new mobo as i thought mine was playing up so had banked on buying a board for approx £120.

So if i had this to spend come payday what is my best option?

the mrs is gonna kill me as i said i wouldn't upgrade until my bd in Nov but with my gpu holding me back big time i want power now not in 2 months!!!!!!

it's just annoying at the moment as i'm not inclined to purchase any top games until my gpu is up to the job. I've not even tried crysis as i know it'll look at my gpu, laugh and walk off!!!!

:p

You new GPU will play crysis on high on a reasonable resolution (4850), but it looks so ******* good :D Your love the new card, you can't imagine the jump in performance you are going to get ;)

Stick the 7900GT on the bay, and hope some mug buys it for more than it's worth.

Well for purely benchmark score a quad core cpu would also make a big diference to the score, but for real world performance the praphics card is definitely the way to go.

its a new gpu you need !
My Systeam spec is.
Cpu E2160 1.8Ghz running at 3.1Ghz (Dual core)
Ram 2Gig of 800Mhz drr2 running at 833
Mobo 965p ds3
Gpu ati hd 4850 512Meg (Stock speed)

MY score on 3d mark 06

10715

SM2.0 4454
HDR/SM3.0 5432
cpu 2445 lol

Edit
i allso think your mobo is better them mine !!!

Thing is does your graphics card play the games you play at the settings you want? There isnt any point in getting something new just to get a higher score in a benchmark in my opinion.

Your graphics card is deffinatly whats holding you back though

I've got a 4870x2 in my IP35-E and I get 17500 3dmark06 and 13500p in Vantage..... There's plenty o life left in your board......

I'd worry about a good GPU with your budget.

the only GPU intesive game i play is COD4. I've not even got Crysis or DMC as the benchmark scores i got for these games were horrible.

i want to play the games to there ability and not to just my gpu's ability

can totally agree that its the GPU, with my HD3850 512mb i am getting 8700 in 3dm '06 with my uber bottleneck 3800x2 @2.5ghz

your system with the same card would most likely hit around 12k +

COD 4 you arent going to have a problem with even with just a budget card like the £54 Gainward OCuk 3850. runs maxed on my machine at 1440x900 at around 50+ fps
