Don't lynch me... Half life 2 - whats the big deal?

ive played them all the way through numerous times still enjoy it, all time classics, i even play HL1 on my little netbook :D

As said, its all a matter of opinion. Just because you find it boring doesn't mean it is, and other people think its the best game ever. I personally really like it, even the low point of Ep1 is better than the majority of games out there, if a bit short.

If you didn't like Half life 2 you have a bad taste in games. Simple as that.

Just bought orange box yesterday at a silly price to see what all the fuss was about.

Yes, the graphics did look dated to me but then I added the FakeFactory's Cinematic Mod 8. Now there's so much more detail and resolution in everything. Shaved off a couple of years in age! Enjoying it so far.

Team Fortress 2 - played it for the first time yesterday just before bed to check it out (after a few hours of HL2). I lost myself for 3 hours in the game!... reminded me of the Unreal days spending countless nights online withs some frantic fragging!
 
I loved HL1, i completed it when i was 11 and it was the best game ever for me at the time, HL2 was a tad dull for me but 'ok', the overall series is pretty damn good though far superior to something like Halo
 
^ pretty much agree with this.

HL1 was awesome... HL2 had the physics and physics gun just done a lil better than Doom3 and FarCry which tried to beat it to the punch... but in general for me Black Mesa was far cooler than City 17...

It's also interesting to go back and read Half-Life 1 reviews... they all go on about how cool the Weapon Placement is... guns are placed logically next to dead Marines... this is par for the course now, but was a big thing back in the day when we were all used to floating spinning guns placed on pedestals.
 
Played both when they were both first released

Half Life was great. I remember everyone not really knowing anything about it here but a whole bunch of us all going out and buying it after one guy got it. It was a fun game, the marines were cool..I don't remember thinking the story was anything special but all in all it was fun and I played it a ton of times.

I played two when it came out...ran through it once, thought it was generally quite boring and bland, and never played it since. I've done episode 1 and 2 also but I still feel like it's an incredibly overhyped game.

I thought Doom3 was leagues better :p
 
Without HL1 we wouldn't have HL2.

Without HL2 we wouldn't have the source engine.

Without the source engine we wouldn't have Team Fortress 2!

Therefore HL1/2 officially rock.

That's the other thing I forgot to mention that bugged me about HL2. Doom took me to Mars, Republic Commando to a galaxy far far away, even Farcry managed a tropical island.

HL2 took me to a crummy eastern european city where all the pubs were closed :(
 
I've not been a pc gamer for long. My first encounter was HL2 on the pc when it first came out. Before that i used to game on the Xbox. Completed halo, halo2. Also completed HL2 on pc and loved every minuit. Never gone back to the xbox, never bought a x360, doesn't that say something? The main things that did it for me was.

1. The high resolution and graphics settings i could play the game at, compared to the low resolution and graphics of Halo on xbox.
2. Wearing headphones immersed me into the game.
2. Mouse & keyboard. Will it ever be beaten?

Half Life 1 was way better in my opinion. Didn't like the setting of Half life 2, and I swear the combine AI is worse than the Marine AI.

The weapons all sound a lot better in Half Life 1 as well - go and play it again if you don't believe me :p

So what FPSs have been released since that make HL2 so average?
 
I thought it was alright, good enough for me to play all the way through which doesn't usually happen, but not enough for me to bother about Ep1 or 2.

It felt very restrictive though, like you were being channeled down one particular route all the time, every other direction was blocked off in some way. I also found the vehicle sections went on for too long too, although were briefly enjoyable.

The mavity gun / placable gun turrets / ant lion control spiced things up a bit, great fun. :)

Still prefer Far Cry though. :p
