Do you carry your license?

So the postie delivered my driving license today, two weeks and a day after I passed, which is on the early side of on time, and I've suddenly thought up a few questions about it I didn't have before. I'd quite like to know why my issue number says 12, for one thing, but a quick peek at the parents' licenses shows one of them at 68, so who knows. :p

But the more important one I was wondering is, how many people take their license with them when they drive, and do you have to? Can't see it stated on the DVLA site, and it doesn't seem to specify anything in the leaflets they sent me. Though apparently, if I'm reading it right, I'm allowed to drive a tractor. o.O

All I can find is that I have to be able to present my license to the police, should they ask for it, but it doesn't specify when, and I'm sure I recall reading something about a seven day grace period before you need to present the license. The current situation is that the photocard bit lives in my wallet, and the paper bit safely at home. Usually, the wallet comes with me when I'm out, so my question is a little redundant, but if I'm just hopping out on a whim or something and forget to pick up the wallet, or if I'm in a hurry and don't need it, then does not having it to hand make any difference?

It's all academic, really, since my insurance runs out in less than a week and I'm going off to uni without a car, but it's one of those situations where I'd quite like to know what most people do. :)

Most of the time i had my license with me. I do get the few odd days when i forget to bring it with me. It's not really a big issue. If you do get pulled over by cops they will just give you a producer.

yep. Only the photo card bit though. It's useful ID. see no reason not to carry it.

Yeah, that's the reason mine lives in the wallet. I was just curious. As far as I'm aware, my parents don't carry theirs with them, whereas most of my newly-passed friends do. Times change, I suppose. :p

As above. Handy ID checker as well for those of us who still look under-age apparently.

Useful if your photo still looks anything like you, perhaps. My own brother doesn't recognise me from mine. :D

I don't carry mine, don't see the point unless you carry both parts.

This may not apply to you, but for me i cannot feel relaxed buying age restricted products without photo ID on me, there is always the odd old woman on a till who will ID you no matter what you look like.

I also make a LOT of chaps payments and large cash withdrawals at my bank. Each one requires photo ID, easiest form is driving license.

For actual driving purposes, yeah, pointless, but there are other uses.

No i dont, because if i loose it, i've gotta pay for a new one. I know someones going to say "well dont loose it then" Thats like saying "well don't accidently fall over today then"
