Bit of a rush job on my part here but I'm driving from Leeds to a friends house in London on Saturday and don't really trust my self not to get lost so I'm in a last minute rush to buy a Sat Nav.

I don't know much about although I have used my Dad's Garmin which is quite nice. A large local supermarket have the TomTom One for 99.99 which seems quite reasonable from the online prices I have checked. Is the TomTom One a good choice? I have read you can get cheaper Sat Nav's and put the TomTom software on them but I don't know which ones this can be done to, maybe I will try research that. :D

Its decent use mine every day at work, but if its just a one off trip just buy a map for £5 or print one off the internet....

I finally caved and picked on up a few weeks back (got fed up of getting lost on some journeys*).
So far i'm pretty happy with it, i'm disappointed that it's maps seem to be about a year out of date though with no newer ones available for updating free (their latest map guarantee doesn't exactly seem worth much), and it's not got all the street names for smaller out of the way areas (something my sisters route 66 one seems better at).

One mildly surprising thing is that it seems to be able to lock on, and keep a lock on 7+ satalites when it's in my bedroom, my sisters RAC/route 66 one had trouble locking onto 5 outside (and kept losing the signal driving in the cotswolds)..

*My whole family are awful navigators "it's the second eixt on the round about"..."i mean the third" (after i've taken the second exit:p), and that's when they can find where we are on the map

There is currently a newer version of the One - the 130s - which speaks street names.
I've not yet seen it in the UK, but I might be getting one while I'm in the USA next week.

I'm sure that USA map will be useful driving around London :D

Buy it from a high street store which you know wont argue about returns, somewhere like tesco, then return it after the trip if its a one off.

Any store that offers no quibble returns on sat navs must be daft, because Tom Tom certainly won't take it back, and re-selling it as new would be dubious legally due to the way the manufacturers regard the software from a licensing point of view.

TomTom One is a perfectly decent sat nav; not the best, but all the functionality you need to get you from A to B.

I say buy it. You won't regret it.

can't fault mine, my mum and brother have the same one

they're £89.99 delivered, from a competitor, a big well known one

Yeah, sorry. You are right about the text to speech. I thought you meant the speaking street names function.

I did mean speaking street names. "text-to-speech" is how the function is referred to on the TomTom website.
In the UK section of the website the One and XL versions don't have it.

You are joking right?

And people wonder why these days it can be a hassle getting shops to take goods back for legitimate reasons.

The TomTom 1 v4 has the function which says: "In 100 yards, turn left onto The Heights" for example... Im pretty sure of that.

Cry me a river. I'm working for argos fairly long term at the moment, you should see some of the stuff they seem to get back into stores, digital cameras full of holiday snaps is a favourite :p
