Do you carry your license?

I do not carry mine, I used to carry it but since I am at the age where if they asked me for ID I would laugh it seems pointless.

Probably not true now but years ago I was told by a fellow mechanic that if you hand the driving license over to a policeman when getting stopped you loose all rights to appeal, giving it to him is effectivley an admission of guilt. Probably nonsense but since I no longer need ID for age restricted products it is of no longer any use in my wallet and therefore only something else to loose.

I don't carry mine. From what I hear the police want both parts when they pull you over anyway so there's no point.

No - the photo part is an ID card by stealth and I refuse to co-operate.

It's not really though is it? You only have on if you can drive. And you aren't required by law to carry it. And, as far as I'm aware, the only reason you would be asked to show it is in relation to a driving offence, and even then, you still have a week to produce evidence that you have a license to drive.

Its usefull, especially if you have recentley passed/finished a ban, as the DVLA dont always update their records straight away, so could save you getting your car seized if you were to get pulled.

Nope, but then it is just a big piece of pink/green paper, still not got around to getting a photo licence yet.

I keep both parts in my wallet, no reason not to. Funnily enough I was asked for ID in a supermarket just the other day so having the license on my made things easier. The look on the womans face when she read it was funny too (I'm 31) :)

After seeing the state of my Dads paper liscence a 4 years ago when we were in France. We got signalled to stop by a Gendarme and duly puled over, he asked to see my dads liscence. Out of his wallet he produced the paper folded up about twenty times. The thing was just about disintegrating when he unfolded it and the Gendarme seemed to be very suprised not to have a card liscence to see! In fact we had to point out some of the things on there for him!

I made the the decision not to carry my paper part about. I do keep my photocard one as it is handy as sometimes I still get pulled up for ID when buying beer in a supermarket (I'm 26 so woohoo).

I hang mine around the neck on an FBI badge holster and go about doing pretend drug busts in garages then running away giggling.

If you produce your paper counterpart at the roadside, the officer is allowed to look at the top folded part, if he wishes to unfold the paper in order to examine it for points, he is supposed to ask for your permission to do this as you have the right to keep this private. Just a little fact. Ofcourse this never actually happens as 99% of the public don't know and 99% of the police don't know.

As for the tractor thing- even a provisional license entitles you to drive one. There is no Tractor practical :p

I kind of figured that, it just took me a little by surprise. :p I wasn't even aware what all the codes on the back of the provisional meant, other than the ones with pictures. I have some entitlements on the paper bit that I don't quite understand either...as of a few days ago (I assume when the license was issued by the DVLA) I have provisional entitlement to BE and GH. B + E is something to do with towing a trailer, and G and H are two seperate codes, and should presumably be two seperate entitlements...what's meant by GH is a bit of a mystery. But meh, I guess if I ever have need of it, I'll find out what it is.

Interestingly enough, this was in the news today - http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/12092008/36/drivers-face-fines-expired-licences-0.html

Thought that might be worth a posting in here just in case. I noticed that expiry thing yesterday when I got the license...had a momentary panic because I thought I had to retake the test when the license expired, but it's just a picture update. :p

And back on topic (vaguely), I think I need a new wallet to cope with all the cards I've been landed with recently. Driving license, railcard, student account card, National Entitlement card and still more to come. :(
