Trying to reinstall 64 bit vista which was working wonderfully well. Fitted 2 new hard drives 300gb in raid o Westernigital Raptors 1000rpm now having problems reinstalling vista.

First attempt was ok until the updates came down and it reported the registry was missing so tried again and this time another file was missing.

Intalled it a third time and had to repair windows then got the updates in and now SP1 wont install at all saying there is a problem with windows.

Things were ok with my old hard drives seagtaes 300gb 7500rpm just wanted something faster for gaming and video editing.

Are there some problems with the WD drives that I should know about??

Any help apprectiated.

start over..

you've got 2x raptors in raid0, correct?

when you install vista on them, remove any other drives (just for the install) to avoid windows using other drives.

also, it's cleaner to use an SP1 install cd

I recently installed (yesterday) Vista x64 (the original DVD with no updates and what not, could not be bothered downloading a newer build from MSDN) on a new RAID0 with another RAID0 and 2 other drives connected.

How on earth would Windows "use other drives" if you specify the drive to install to?

I also updated to SP1 etc yesterday absolutely fine - with no devices taken out and with 8gb RAM (supposedly the original Vista build cannot handle > 4gb? :)

Edit: I just remembered I had a similiar problem a build or 2 ago, with a P35 I was trying to raid (gave up in the end as I had other problems with it). Essentially, Windows would always install "corrupted". The problem ended up being a bad overclock which caused corruption on the SATA controller for some reason. Reminds me of a problem I had with nForce 4

i don't know if there's been other changes to vista install, but in xp, if you had two drives installed, and you selected the 2nd one, the boot sector would be on the first, and letter drives would be shot

better practice to only install with one drive / array imo

That's XP. Vista has a completely new way of addressing drives. No matter where the Array/drive lies in order, it does not matter. It will always set the drive you select to install to as "C".

Actually better practice for XP is to make sure the C is at the lowest SATA position compared to others, but we are talking about Vista here, which does not apply.
