XL Airlines(Inc. Travel City) Goes into administration

To be honest I'm glad, this company is the worst Airline I have ever flown.

Bad about peoples jobs, but the company deserves it.

If you mean Travel City then I think you would have been pleasently suprised. We flew with TC a few years ago and they were OK. Flew Virgin this May and they were nowhere near as good as TC either for their staff, standard of the plane or the quality and frequency of refreshments. Despite paying a couple of hundred quid extra per person in comparison

I find it silly how you can't get your money bacl if you paid by Debit card...At the end of the day, you payed for the flight, they cancelled due to no interaction from yourself, then you can't get your money back?

I don't have a credit card...So paying by that just would not be an option for me.

Visa Debit card should allow you to claim money back, its the Switch / Maestro that is not so good.
Too true I heard about that on working lunch :p, although I apparently some call centre's etc don't know about it so you might have to 'remind' them etc.

Ah, good good :) I'm alrite then hopefully!

Going away next month, but hopefully Easyjet wont go into liquidation by then.

BBC just interviewed a women on the phone who was just about to go on a wedding, she was almost crying, feel so sorry for her.....

Just been told XL sponsored Westham as well, wondered how that will play out?

Typical... My parents go on holiday for the first time in 7 years and this happens as they were due to fly back monday  Now I get to spend the afternoon on the phone trying to find out what they are going to do about it all.

I don't understand the big fuss, airline has gone, big deal, people who have already booked should get their money back via bonding/credit cards.

People who are stranded should get flights using their travel insurance surely??

Debatable...You would be surprised how little standard travel insurance actually does for you.

Why is it silly? With a credit card you are covered by the Consumer Credit Act, that's just the way it is. Otherwise you'd not get any money back at all.

Why people don't buy everything on a credit card these days is beyond me, especially when cards with cashback and other rewards are easily available.

Cause I don't want a credit card...?

I buy thing's with the money I have, not some imaginary sum.

I probably will look into getting one one day, but I have no idea how they 'properly' work anyway.

Well, proves my case.

The world is a bunch of money grabbing hoo-har's.

Not really, it's because once a company goes into liquidation the assets are frozen and creditors paid out in a specific order (IIRC tax man, employees then large creditors, with customers at the bottom of the list as customers will generally only have very small amounts at stake compared to the suppliers etc).

Credit cards offer you protection as they are deemed jointly liable as you are using them for their credit facilities.
Debit cards are equivalent to cash in the eyes of the law, so any protection above what you'd get if you paid cash is at the banks/card companies discretion (and could be withdrawn).

Basically if the company goes bust, it doesn't have the money to legally refund you so cannot refund you*, all the credit cards have insurance to cover you if this happens

Hence the reason even if you have the cash sitting next to you in a pile, it's always best to pay for things that you can't walk home with by credit card as it offers you much better protection.

I suspect we're going to see a lot more companies, especially those that are heavily reliant on things like fuel for the basic business going bust :(
