What goalkeeper gloves?

Hello,

For the last 2 seasons for my Saturday team I have been the on/off goalkeeper as we don't have a proper one. This season it seems I am now the 1st choice keeper (got MOTM 1st game of the season :))

Anyway, I thought now might be a good time to get some proper gloves of my own. I am happy to spend up to £40 on them, but there are so many to choose from.

What are good for this budget? My glove size is 9.

There was another pair of Adidas that had some kind of spine on the fingers anf the back of the hand and I found them too rigid for my liking

I bought some finger-safe ones for about £20 a few years ago.

I don't go in goal much (maybe do in the garden / park once in a while) but they allow me to belt the ball at my little brother

Any other proper keepers on this forum who can offer their advice?

Regrettably I'm mad enough to play between the sticks!

Gloves much like boots are pretty personal but I've always used Uhlsport or reusch, the former I've found better in generally in the wet!

a lot of gloves are coming with crazy amounts of padding which p*sses me off tremendously as you can hardly feel the ball and some are more like baseball gloves!

These look pretty good

And I've had a pair pretty similar to these

Remember to keep a bottle of water in the goal and at the start of each game lightly pour some water over the gloves as your grip will be improved and they'll wear less easily! I don't know how often you'll play/train but gloves seem to wear pretty easy these days and before I got injured I was going through 2/3 pairs a season! It normally pays to have a match pair and a training pair (just get some £20 ones for training).

If you can try em first (which really rules out net purchase) then all the better

Good luck

Unfortunately, I am crazy enough to play in goal also. What I will say about goalkeeping gloves its all a matter of preference. I for one will only wear Adidas and Nike gloves, purely because they fit perfectly.

Goalkeepers who have tried on and worn different make of gloves will know what I mean. Not all gloves, even those of the same size have the right fit, and if they dont fit/sit properly, you get injuries.

I have three pairs of gloves, 2 Adidas ones and a Nike pair. If the weather is horrible, or has been raining I tend to wear the Adidas ones because of the better grip and they are more weather proof in my opinion. Also, I have two pairs because if its chucking it down, a quick change of gloves at half time makes all the difference.

I have 2 pairs of these:

And these Nike ones:

The Adidas ones with the fingersave technology take some getting used to, but are brilliant, wouldn't be concerned about breaking fingers (a goalkeepers worst injury) in them.

Hope that helps.

Yeah - I think i tired every brand and style before i finally come to the decision which gloves i liked the best.

Oh, and also - Fingersave aren't certain to stop your fingers being broken - I broke a finger while using some Fingersave gloves about 4 years ago. And also, our Stand in 'Keeper broke his finger just a couple of weeks ago, while using Fingersave.

It's very unlucky, but it does happen :(

Another one with a screw loose here. As said it's really a personal thing. I've always used Adidas Fingersave's :)

Thanks for the advice guys.

At training I don't tend to get any training for being in goal (which is a bit annoying, as I need it - formerly a forward you see) so they will only get used once a week on a Saturday.

I'll have a look at the ones suggested above and try some out :)

EDIT: I read that a good way to find out your glove size if to measure your palm in inches, then add 1" on that and that is your size. Is that right?

I think different makes have different measurements. Some are around the palm and I think some measure from the base of your palm to the top of the middle finger.

You tend to go for a slightly larger glove too.

Most will have a size chart on the back of the pack. Go to JJB Sports (we sell Sells, Uhlsport, Adidas, Nike) find out the correct glove size and then go buy online (I really shouldn't be offering this advice! :p) Unless we're cheaper of course...

I play in goal at a pretty decent standard. I always buy my gloves from prodirectsoccer.com, usually from the 2 for £XX as you save money and both pairs of gloves will last you a season.

For the past two or 3 seasons I've worn Sondico. They fit my hand like, errr, a glove! Very nice fit for my size hands (I am also a size 9). Last season I used to International Wrap series, I like the wrap with the roll finger type palm. They lasted really well and I've used them in pre-season this year, until I had to buy some new ones (unfortunately due to finances I had to get some Sellsports (2 for £25, instead of £50!) to last me for the time being. When I get paid I'll be ordering a pair of Sondico's again and use the Sellsports for training.

I would echo the suggestion of keeping a bottle of water in your goal and use that to keep the palm moist. Don't spit on your gloves, this aids the wear on the latex palm. Always wash your gloves with warm water, the sooner the better. Don't put them in the washing machine and don't let them dry with the thumb pressed against the palm as it will stick together!! If you can afford it, buy some of the glove wash from prodirectsoccer.com as well, it will prolong the life of your gloves.

Let us know which you plump for and how you get on.

I was a 'keeper, I had to quit due to several broken bones :( I always opted for Reusch or Sondico, pretty cheap.

Another tip, a combination of PVA glue and water in a spray bottle worked a treat for me, saves spitting too.

fingersave all the way. i play in net every so often (teams 2nd keeper really when our main one is away) and i hate using anything less than finger save.

unless you like stubbed fingers!
