I thought I would stand up and say why I honestly think Games For Windows Live is a great service that is getting better all the time. I know many people seems to jump on the bandwagon of slagging GFW off before really giving it a chance.

1. First of all Games For Windows Live is now totally free, which I agree it should have been from the start.

2. The cross-platform gaming is a great idea and I think should be implemented more has this increases the chance of finding an online game. So often it can be hard to find a game with enough players online.

3. Achievements - Possibly my favourite thing about GFW. I think it helps bring a game together and makes it more fun to actually finish the game. I think all future games where possible should have achievements after all it costs nothing to use GFW now.

4. Gamepad support - Also massive boost to PC gaming for some games a gamepad is a must and I reckon this could encourage developers to release more fighting games, etc on the PC as these play better usually with a gamepad. However I do think to get the very best of both worlds there should be an option to switch between keyboard/mouse and controller and which ever you use the game will adapt to your input. The best games so far to have best support for keyboard or gamepad are Bioshock, Gears Of War and Crysis. Also using a gamepad has rumble which is a nice feature. This is where PC gaming should excel in the fact games should be playable with many input devices.

Also i think depending whether you are using keyboard or gamepad online games should match you with gamers using the same input type.

5. Widescreen and high resoultion gaming - although many games have started to introduce higer resoultions I think they should all have widescreen options and most GFW does.

6. Finally the Games For Windows Marketplace is a great idea. It is the future that games have addons and it's only fair that you should pay for these if they are meaty enough. The Marketplace will allow you to purchase these easily. Also great if it could update your GFW games with the latest patches, etc.

7. Arcade games - Although many arcade games are already available over the PC I think GFW arcade games will be better. Hopefully they will also have high resoultions which you don't get on many current PC arcade games, they should also have achievements and also gamepad support. Certain arcade games such has Lumines would benfit greatly from the GFW features.

I also have a few ideas which would make PC gaming better overall, just my thoughts really

1. PC Games and games in general should have a price point of either 14.99, 17.99 or 24.99 and only collectors editions should be 29.99 or 34.99. These prices would appeal to great demand of customers.

2. I think addons to games like new chapters should be no more than £8.

3. I can't stand that some games support PC, then they don't, then they do again. I think if you are going to release a games on a platform then you should support it throughout including following games. Gears of War was released on the PC, then so should GOW2. This is a major problem with gaming that you would never see if movies. You don't for example have Shrek on DVD and then Shrek 2 not released on DVD if you see what I mean.

4. All PC games should run without the need for the disc in the drive.

5. All expansions and extra content should be available to every platform it was released on no exclusive deals. Exclusive deals are alright for so long but eventually the aim should be to release it on every platform it's the same principle has point 3.

6. Copy protection. The current DRM on games is plain crazy. There should be one set of protection where your games is registered to your house/phone line that way you can install it has many times or has many machines within your home but not on machines elsewhere.

Just my rant for the afternoon ;)

It's pants tbh. I'm not quite sure what you're saying but loads of the points you make AREN'T specifically related to GFW - you're making it out as if GFW brought about all this stuff. In a typical Microsoft fashion it's just some service with absolutely no idea about what its supposed to be and with no mission statement.

Steam - that's all I'll say.

I also think Steam is a great service and use it for some of my games, just wish some of them could be abit cheaper.

I am not saying Microsoft have invented all the points I am saying but they certainly do a good job of bringing them all together and now it's free it can't really hurt to give it a try.

Maybe when the marketplace launches it will help bring all the GFW elements together.

the main problem with gfw is that they dont have any support from the 2 biggest pc game developers valve and blizzard and are unlikely to have any because valve has steam and blizzard will have battle.net with there own games tied to an account with there own achievements and now stardock has impulse another platform it makes it even more less likly

also dont see any reason for cross platform play as you will have to gimp the pc controls or give xbox 360 owners some kind of auto aim

I disagree.
First of all, your analogy is flawed. Plenty of movies come out straight to video/dvd without getting a proper cinema release - for example take the American Pie series, they didn't all air on the big screen. Sequels bypassing one of the platforms is commonplace in the movie industry.
Secondly, you need to remember that for a developer, the fewer platforms you support, the easier it is to get a game to market. Obviously, you can potentially limit your revenue stream in this fashion, but it makes sense to focus on the most profitable areas. I'd imagine that the XB360 sales of GoW dwarf the PC sales. It's the type of game which seems well suited to a console and chances are most people that are interested in the series will get the console version rather than wait for a PC version, although obviously you'll have a few who don't have the console.

At the end of the day, if the market is big enough on PC then they will make a release to that platform eventually. The more recent GTA games being a good example.

Fantastic OcUK thread :). The OP goes to the effort of laying down his thoughts, and the replies consist of "you're wrong".

Didn't know about this, and the game list is pretty limited at the mo tbh, but it certainly has great potential. Although I find steam frustrating at times, I do like the idea of not having to worry about patching games, the ability to switch between gamepad and keyboard is a good idea and I like the idea of cross platform gaming, nowt as pleasurable as kicking the x-boxers into touch :D
