Best Linux for olde laptop

Latest OpenGEU ?

I have 8.4 and I am very much in love with it.

Dont have it on a system at this moment, however, I am planning on using OpenGEU on the Packard Bell E3242 LapTop as thats incapable of any 3D but I still want a distro thats visually stunning and more importantly, looks nothign like Windows... Somehting that KDE and hell, even xfce & Gnome are starting to look too much like.

In terms of stability, I have to say though, that its not rock solid... At least it has not been for me. I do admit in the same breath, that when I install a distro I put it to absolutel hell and back to find out if it has any flaws, so I might well have been the cause, but then again, I expect my O/S of choice to be able to take such stick from me.

Perhaps a basic stable setup and a visit to enlightenment.org might be a better option perhaps? I know that there is a good script for getting it into ubuntu on the ubuntu forums... Give that a shot.

I think thats what I might do if I have any issues next time I try OpenGEU, but I have to admit that I love the themes in O.G

:O i forgot about reactoOS!

Dont think will ever really take off....

AJUK i think everyone has one from their travels.... (though mines legal :D)

Nah, ReactOS has promise, but its going far too slow for me.

Ive had a tinkle but thats as far as it went and from what I saw the first time, to what I saw only a few months ago, I saw very little change.

I have Xubuntu on a P3 1.2Ghz, 256mb RAM laptop and it works fantastically.

I'll give that a go then. OpenGEU wouldn't display the main screen on my lappy. Maybe it can't handle Enlightenment with its CLE266 graphics with 64MB shared memory? This isn't frustrating really, it's interesting to see what's out here.

GEU booted on my desktop but didn't see the HDD for partitioning. Another case of AHCI needing to be on I think. Which is a shame as it looks great but I'm running XP on my other HDD.

I have standard Ubuntu on a P3M 1.2GHz/512mb and that also runs fantastically and supports all the hardware in the laptop. The only thing I bought to complete the setup was a wi-fi dongle that has native driver support. Saves messing with Windows drivers.
