Help me chose a sporty replacement for my c-class :)

He is chopping in a C class and wants something sporty, worried about the credit crunch. i doubt he wants to take a new car for under £14k and take a huge depreciation hit!

if he has 14k to spend maybe the credit crunch isn't hitting him quite as hard.
Being as he didn't say if he wanted new or used i prefer not to jump to conclusions.

Some replies I missed their! I don't fancy a new car thanx :)

Whats wrong with the 2.2? It is slightly less powerful than I had imagined but it does have the sports 18" wheels which look nice. I will see how it drives and if it feels underpowered.

Anyone know about maintaining a porsche? Do they require main dealers?

Thank you again for all the replies :)

The 2.2 costs the same to run, service and repair as the 3 litre but is more than 60bhp down on it. So why bother?

From your posts in this thread '2.2 seems fine' 'do i need to use a dealer' I'd suggest a Porsche is best left alone :)

As far as I'm aware, you'd definately want a specialist or a dealer but then again, they are very capable of putting on high miles. A guy at work ran one 60 miles a day without issue. Cost him a few quid at service but then again, anything you're looking at will tbh. The 3.2s really is the one to have.

Would agree with that!

As for boxster running costs, I was looking at a guide on one of the porsche forums (cant remember which sorry) and it was quite detailed into the running and living with of a boxster. quite interesting if you are definitely interested!

Boxster was on the list before my parents got the Z4. Decided although they are great cars it was just too much hassle. Whereas you can just take the Z4 to the dealer and thats that.

Boxster S would be my choice at this budget, but then again I am bias as an owner.

They need to be maintained by main dealer or specialists really. Servicing and running costs are not dis-similar to my old 330Ci, so I would imagine similar to a Z4 3.0. All the other suggestions on here are good too, depending on what your preferences are. My brother just spent £13.8K on a '04 plate 350Z and that is a brute of a car. I looked at a Z4 before deciding on the Boxster and you get a lot more for your money than the Porsche in terms of it being newer with more kit. But for me the ride was a bit too harsh and the Boxster put more smiles on my face.

Go and drive good examples of everything suggested and I think you'll find one you like and it will be a good choice. To my mind this is currently a great price point to get some quality motors in the sector you're looking at. 3-6 year old cars that cost £35K+ new and have so much left in them.

as oppose to taking the boxtser to the dealer and thats that?

The point I am making is that the Z4 is 'just a BMW' whereas the Boxster is a Porsche. An OPC is a very expensive way of maintaining a Porsche, etc etc. The Boxster is a step up from the Z4 IMHO, both in terms of ability but also in terms of the way its looked after and the associated running costs.

350z seems a good suggestion.

You could have the usual Golf GTI/Astra VXR/Focus ST as they sit in your budget, bit of a wild card and hardly the same pedigree as a the 350/boxster/z4 really but would give you more seats (is the mrs thinking babies?)

You know what happens, you provide the seats and the doors and the babies will arrive to fill them :p

We came to an agreement and I paid the deposit on this:

It is such fun to drive and sounds fantastic!! I know its not the quite the 3.0 but its quick enough to be fun without the mrs getting irate!

I was impressed by the lack of wind with the top down and how quiet the car was with the roof up on the motor.

Overall I'm blown away! :D

I can't wait to pick it up on friday!! Lets hope kids don't come to soon!! :p;)

Thank you for the recommendations everyone!!

One thing I would like to just say is the Z4 is very expensive to insure! Much more than my TT and c class!

Great cars, real shame you didnt get the 3.0, I really cant understand why you didn't. You've bought very quickly, there are plenty of 3 litres around and anything less is pointless as it costs exactly the same to run.

But still - a great car and yes they are expensive to insure. Dream Red Oregon leather for the win ;)

Its a straight 6 2.2 and its in great condition throughout! :)

Mr Fox I take on board what you mean about the 3.0 but I'm happy with the 2.2 as it is cheaper on insurance and I don't need the extra grunt as the mrs tells me off when I boot it :)
