If you had £500 in your hand, and wanted a large-ish car for sitting on the motorway, what would you buy?

By large I mean Mondeo sized upwards!

id stear clear of 800 series, many problems with them over the years, and you can rob them with a tennis ball :D
try staying on the vauxhall/volvo front

Only real problem with the 800 was the electrics. Quick re-solder of the internal fuse box and you're good to go.

Volvo 940/960 or Saab 9000. They are both very comfortable, especially the seats. For £500 you'll get a rather tidy one as well :) . Both models are also available with turbo, which means that you can easily get upwards to 200 bhp by only remapping and upping turbo pressure. ;)

My Sierra was £250, hasn't missed a beat and Ive been driving Brighton > Bournemouth in it 4 times a week recently.

Condition would be more important then what car it was.

I'd be on the look out for Omegas, Senators, Citroen XMs (which I think might start appreciating in a few years), Alfa 164s and Saab 9000s.

EDIT: Oh Largish, probably a Xantia or a Mondeo.
