360/PS3 FIFA 09 would only run on “1-3% of PCs”

Oh dear the excuses seem to get worse and worse. Here's what an EA representative said on its forums regarding why PC users don't get a next-gen update.

The PC version of FIFA 09 is different to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions because of the CPU processing power required for the architecture of the game.

The majority of gamer's PC's do not have enough CPU processing power for this architecture, so FIFA09 on PC has been built to have the best possible graphics and gameplay engine while still being accessible to as many fans of the game as possible. If the architecture was identical to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, FIFA09 on PC would only be accessible to 1-3% of the PC systems on the market.

Having said that, FIFA09 on PC delivers a very deep gameplay engine, along with leading-edge visuals.

So it's not only LucasArts that are using lame excuses then...

I have PC in sig, fairly decent, but have finally given up on PC gaming.

I have a 360 Elite and am sticking to that. Nice just to be able to put the DVD in the drive without having to patch, tweak, ect, safe in the knowledge the game is optimised for my console.

Oh and FIFA 09 demo looks stunning on the 360!

I pretty much gave up on console gaming when I tried to play Mass Effect. It ran like turd and was in no way optimised for my console, unfortunately I couldn't patch or tweak it in any way as it's a locked system.

You're in the wrong forum BTW. :)

Err, no i'm not. I posted regarding the PC version of FIFA 09 in the PC games forum. Thanks anyway.:)

That's BS - it sucks. I don't have a console, except for an Xbox which is really my HTPC. All my mates have either a PS3 or a 360 and give me a hard time because they reckon consoles are better, but after playing the FIFA's and the GTA4's, I know they will look better on a PC. I really think that besides a few marquis titles that come out throughout the year, that PC gaming is in a steep decline...my computer could play FIFA09.

Also, that 1-3% excuse is bull, as if that was the case, then EA certainly wouldn't have released Crysis!

LucasArts and EA are just trying to let us down lightly, our money isn't good enough for them any more because we're a minority. They could at least be honest about it thought instead of crying "pirates are killing the game" and "PCs wouldn't run this game, that runs fine on much weaker hardware". :(

I know what you meen by just putting the dvd in,and it plays.
But i have given up on console gaming because i think pc gaming is miles better!
You cant really add stuff to consoles games like you can with PC games
Ex FM08 with all the kits and logos and badges and so on.And the graphics well! The 360 is miles behind the PC for that!! And dont say that you need to spend silly money on a card! You dont a 8800GT are about £80 now! Oh yeah and fifa 09 I think that looks better on the PC,It has a Higher REZ ;) Its just the stupid people can't bothered be working hard on a pc game!! EA just stick to your consoles(Apart from Crysis lol which will never be on the 360 :D;) ) ,Im getting PES2009 after that fifa demo!!
Oh just one more thing GTA4 is out soon on PC! And what iv'e seen that looks way better then the consoles!

LOL what complete tosh, so 1-3%, wouldn't that be the dual quad core extreme setups with tri SLI gtx280's and 8gb of DDRIII, you know the systems that see negligible game performance increase compared to cost. Makes you sick when they treat you like an idiot and fill you full of B.S.

Allthough i know i shouldnt have bought a 360, cant get these damn red lights to **** off from the front of my pc:rolleyes:

Identical experience here.
The 360 has been collecting dust ever since.

IMO Games are just better on PC

While the 1-3% statistic is obviously exaggerated it is worth noting that i believe the majority of normal consumers have computers that are probably less powerful than the 360/PS3 (yes i know the hardware in the consoles is old, but due to the lack of a 'full' OS and the standardized hardware they can push a lot more out of it than the same hardware on a PC is capable of).

Keep in mind this is an enthusiasts forum, i imagine only 10% of the PCs in homes are as powerful as ours.

Sure smells like made up in here, no offense. The DMC4 benchmarks thread in the GPU forum has at least one example of it running in 720p on Xenos-equivalent hardware, please be sure to stop by.

When Oblivion came out I was getting Xbox 360 levels of performance on an X1800 at 1280x960 (~25% more pixels than 720p?), and this was with anisotropic filtering, light antialiasing and graphics mods. Even back then the 360 didn't have the raw power, it sure as hell doesn't now I'm afraid.

If that's the case then i'm wrong. I was going by the fact that it's been like that with all previous consoles, for example God of War 2 on the PS2, i'd be shocked if a PC with a 300mhz CPU could run that. Maybe the new consoles operating systems have become so bloated now that their detriment on performance has become the same as that of windows etc.

I have actually wondered this myself you know, about why older consoles seemed more "clean" and "optimised". Maybe it's because multiplatform games are so common now or something.

Or maybe pc performance has improoved exponentially compared to 300mhz cpu days and that its only console marketing that is keeping the consoles ahed in performance, pc have opend the gap in there favour since the days of the duron and mx440's but users instead of grasping this have turned lazy and opted for the simple option.

I wouldn't say i've turned lazy. I've moved (mostly) over to consoles because there's simply more games and i don't ever need to upgrade it, games will always work on it till the next iteration comes out. When i was a huge PC enthusiast i used to spend around the cost of my PS3 every year in order to keep it up to spec, but now it just isn't worth it as i'm just bored, the only game that has interested me in ages has been crysis. I used the last of my funds to chuck an extra 2gig of ram and a 8800GT into my system to tide it over until the PC market is revitalized (hopefully).

Heres another of the EA guys response:

[1] I am aware that some PC systems are as capable as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (and that some are even more capable than them), but the majority of PC systems aren't (see [4]).

[2] The fact that a PC system can run Gears of War, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, etc. is irrelevant: the gameplay architecture of FIFA09 can not be compared to games of a different genre, and it is a fact that the majority of PC systems do not have enough CPU processing power for FIFA09 on PC to be the same as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

[3] This means that, although some of your PC's may be able to 'handle' a better gameplay architecture, only 1-3% of PC systems on the market could 'handle' the same gameplay architecture that FIFA09 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have (see [4]).

[4] "If the architecture was identical to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, FIFA09 on PC would only be accessible to 1-3% of the PC systems on the market." That is a fact.

However, because the PC continues to benefit from constant graphics and performance increases (and always will), the FIFA series on the PC will continue to improve each year, and it's architecture will, in time, 'surpass/exceed' the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 versions.
I didn't say that FIFA 2010 on PC will (or won't) be the same as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game (because I do not know whether it will (or won't) be, at this moment in time).

Thank you for the constructive feedback that most of you have provided on this subject, so far.

Ive never understood these argumants, pc games dont have to have a bleeding edge system, you knock settings down and tweak the settings and the same game will run as good and look as good as it done on the console, you buy new hardware and the game looks much nicer, runs better in some cases and in general is a better gaming experience. all the console does is takes away the need for you to tweak the settings as a dev does it before it gets to you, dont for one second fool yourself into thinking that the game made for a console 3 years after its release runs as well on it as it does on an up to date pc. This is where i get the lazy from, people dont want to tweak there games and so for that reason say that its easier to use there consoles and migrate over to that platform. the only reason there are less and less games for the pc is because people make this move to the console and game developers such as ea in this thread follow trend and discard the minority however faithfull they have been in the past.

Nothing wrong with that but as im a avid pc gamer loyal to the end, i must wage the war:cool:

never heard such crap in all my life, its like hes saying take all the pcs out there and only 1-3% will run fifa well yeah if you include all the laptops and desktop pcs that people that arent gamers use.

If you break it down into gamers pcs im sure he will find the figure is that more like 70 -80% at least
