What do you pay your cleaner?

£10ph isn't all that much to be honest, whilst the hike from £6ph to £10ph is the overall amount really isn't much compared to prices I've seen charged.

Having asked friends/family what they seem to get charged, and from posts here, it seems as though i may have to just suck up the charge. After all, i like and trust the woman and i cannot fault her work.

Jez, I'm sure she was undercharging. I know it's cash in hand but £6/hour is awful.

I'd agree to the price rise but I'd point out anything you're unhappy with and make sure she knows you expect an impeccable service to justify the extra cost.

Indeed, i am thinking that it may not be worth the trouble switching either, at least this one is a known entity. My parents have nightmares with some of their "help".

£6 per hour sounds on the low side. My guess is someone has told her she is undercharging, hence the larger increase.

If you factor in she has to travel to your house, then to another after etc while she is not getting paid for this time. So she may only be getting paid for say 6 hours of work per day then she has her expenses as well.

So it does not work out at a massive wadge.

what a load of tosh, there are loads of cleaners out there, good ones for £7 an hour.

Say to her that you will meet in the middle at £7.50 and review it in the near future, or if you are willing to pay £10 p/h tell her you expect the job to be done 60% better i.e. in less time.

EDIT: if you went to your boss/people who pay you and demanded a 60% increase in pay/margins they would tell you to take a hike unless you can justify the raise.

Just don't make a mess in the first place and clean up as you go. Takes next to no time to clean. 2 Hours a week tops.
Even if I had bundles of spare cash I wouldn't hire a cleaner. Unless you got like a 10 bed house.

Sounds like it was previously low to me as well.

I keep thinking about getting a cleaner but never knew how much to expect to pay for one. Now I do. I also live in West Berkshire. I really don't do a good job of it myself. :(

Jez has an 11 bed house.

She might have to much work and as such is pricing a few people out the market and wont care if she gets a pay rise or not.

How many hours a week do you work? If I work it out, I probably do 60-70. Aside from the other factors I mentioned, 2 hours a week is precious free time.

It's hard to clean as you go with the kitchen/toilet/etc.... then there's dust.

I normally agree with you but have to disagree with this. There are definitely times when some help is needed; job demands and kids are the first two things which spring to mind.

It's dependant on your situation, of course, but sometimes the money is of less relevance than the result. If that makes sense :)

Around 60ish

kitchen if you just wipe the stove and sides down then it stays clean. Stick plates in the dishwasher or wash by hand as you go.

Then all you need to do is give the place a once over. Which doesn't take long at all. It only takes a long time if the kitchen has had no cleaning and everything been baked on or the shower has been left to build up lime scale.
If you keep things clean, things literally just need a wipe down with some cleaning products.

Don't get me wrong of course it's sometimes needed, I was just saying it doesn't take that long and as people have said it depends what your time is worth.

Indeed, and this case it is. Hence me not asking advice as to whether they consider a cleaner to be worth employing.

I am going to suck it up and let her know that the work must be impeccable for the money. I don't think finding another cleaner is going to be worth it.

No point in me having a cleaner, you'll either make loads of mess and seem like a jackass or be careful about the mess you make, resulting in inconvinience. Then your cleaner might be nicking from you and all?
It's like taking my work home with me having an employee.

Plus i'm not lazy, perfectly capable of cleaning my own mess up. :D

I'd say £6 an hour is a fair wage baring in mind it's an unskilled job

to be honest id rather pay a cleaner £10 an hour that i know and trust rather than someone £6 an hour that i dont know wont pinch from me.

then again id give my mum £10 an hour to clean my house.

Just so we're clear, that's a monthly wage of £2,400, assuming an 8 hour, 5 day a week job.

Not an insubstantial sum.

Actually having thought about £15 is probably a little too much for a cleaner as it isn't weather dependant like the other 2 jobs. It would also depend on whether they provided their own cleaning materials as well. Also an 8 hour day for a house cleaner would probably actually be more like a 9 1/2-10 hour day due to travelling between jobs. Still I think £10 per hour should be the absolute minumum.

10phr is an very decent wage. Maybe acceptable in London. But outside London it's a ridiculous wage.
