Ok firstly a bit of background. I was out riding on Monday night and basically I ended up riding into a puddle... which ended up being about 16" deep (well over the hubs so maybe more) which was a bit of a suprise :o . I cleaned her up and re-oiled the chain but when out today it was sounding rough and even rougher when I really cranked on the pedals. There also seems to be a tiny bit of sideways play in the cranks so I think my bottom bracket has died :(

Now the problem- the bike is a GT Avalanche but other than that I know nowt. A search brings up Avalanche 3.0 2.0 1.0 0.5 etc etc. All I know is mine is bottom of the range, lower than a 3.0 I think  Infact, here she is-

What I really need to know is what type of bottom bracket it is likely to have and what tools I will need (I have general tools but no bike specific stuff). Basically if anyone can point me in the right direction to save me taking it to a bike shop and assuming the position I'd be really grateful.

TIA :)

You will have a square taper BB. Go to chainreaction and get a Shimano BB tool that can "extract" the crank arms. However going through a puddle doesnt normaly break the bottom bracket

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=17473 £14.99 for the Bottom Bracket and wil do the job

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=689 £8.99 Shimano BB tool

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=14424 £9.99 Shimano crank arm extractor

You sir are a legend, really appreciated.

As for how it broke maybe it was just a coincidence? Or maybe it wasn't watertight as it was submerged for about a minute or so as I performed my tactical dismount and yanked the poor thing out of the gloop :p

No problems! :)
I would take the plastic cap off the the center of the crank arm just to make sure it is a square taper..... Just so my advice isn't duff
