Some friends of mine just came back from a school rugby match, and told me that the scrum collapsed on one boy and his neck and spine were damaged, he was taken to hospital by air ambulance, and he might become paralysed (god forbid) but apparently he can move his legs and some other parts but some parts he can't move at the moment, hopefully he'll become better with time. I'm horrified, it's incidents like these which make me deteste rugby.

Well, that's what rugby is. I remember being forced to play it at school. It was worse when the ground was still frozen in the winter. Rock solid.

It is a dangerous sport...which makes my wonder why it is not optional? I was never told of the dangers of playing Rugby as a kid when I was being forced to play.

I'm very sorry to hear about this incident.

Same thing happened to me and I was lucky enough to avoid paralysis (had to stop playing though), it's one of the risks.

No more dangerous than coming off a bike at speed, crashing a racing car into a wall, falling from a horse and landing on your neck etc etc.

I won't go into a discussion about why you shouldn't detest Rugby though, I'm very much a fan boy :p.

Hope the guy recovers fully, it's a horrid thing to happen at such a young age.

thankfully I'm not included in the squad anymore, can't say I'm built terribly well to play it though...

You should just refuse to play if they try to make you.

When I got to year 10, me and my mate just used to go along the seafront and to the arcades to play pool instead of playing sport. The good ol' days.

So you want everyone to be wrapped up in cotton wall..

it's a stupid statement.

No, It's not.

Rugby is a dangerous sport. Very Dangerous. And it should be optional. It's not a case of wrapping anyone up in cotton wool, I am very good at the sport, And I loved playing it.

If you have played, Then you should know how things can go wrong. I've had broken bones!

Don't suppose u live near chesterfield? whilst we was working on car earlier a emergency helicopter flew over us rate low twice (there and back)

Just wondering?

Most sports can be dangerous. do you want to make football, hockey, field sports and everything else optional as well?

It was a school rugby match, so it was totally optional anyway.

I guess I'm just a wuss then?

Not a wuss just unrealistic. Even football can damage your knees forever.

As horrible an accident as it is, its part of playing rugby, my brothers fractured his collarbone (ok slightly less serious injury) 7 times due to the fact he loves playing it, and its a risk hes willing to take.

Friend of a friend was walking down some stairs once, slipped, fell and broke his neck, doesnt mean we should all stop walking down stairs, is sadly just one of those things.

Nasty :/

I've still got a bad knee from playing rugby at school. My mate tackled me above the waist because he was too much of a girl to go for my legs. My top half spun round but my leg didn't go with it. It keeps on locking up and should be interesting when I'm an old fella.
