Was just wondering - I seem to remember being told that it is not "illegal" to drive without your headlights on whilst on a well-lit road at night, is this the case?

What are the other rules regarding driving without headlights at night + what are the consequences if you're caught?

I know it can be very dangerous + whatnot, and there's no justifiable reason for doing so but I don't know what the rules are on this.

Thanks

Speaking from experience of the Police at night, its usually, a damn good rollocking! :o:p, although you need eyes like a Rabbit with X-Ray Vision to get very far on sidelights without street lighting!!

A few times, I've driven a fair distance in near darkness in my Scania :o unfortunately, as you switch the ignition on, the dashboard backlight kicks in, giving the impression that the lights are on (I know, its dark outside the cab - it should be a clue that there not! ) dashboard lit has always previously told me the lights are on! - I must get used to modern technology! :o:o :p

My ZX had a the dash lights on with the ignition and i had to have the steering wheel set right to the top which meant i couldn't see the tell tales on the dash.

Needless to say i used to get flashed a lot.

It's not just about whether or not you can see well enough, it's about making damn sure other people can see you. Regardless of the law, driving at night or in poor visibility conditions without lights on is dangerous.

Is it illegal to drive without lights on in fog aswell?

The amount of people I see doing this is crazy  Really ****es me off

I can only think they either forget to put them on or think "well I can see the road so there's no need for lights".

If its the latter then I hope they all crash and burn.

drive without? you should not have them on (front or rear) unless the view is limited.

i remember one time i drove out of a petrol forecourt which was brightly lit and proceeded to drive down the dual carriageway in the dark with no lights on, when i noticed i felt dumb lol. (this was a long time ago when i'd just passed my test.

Normal lights, not fogs, and i'm on about thick fog like we've had recently, where you can't really see cars approaching exits/entrances to roundabouts.
