Hi all,

Im looking to get some home insurance. Only need contents, not building as its a council flat. Would also like accidental cover.

Can anyone recommend any companies? Lots of bad reports of insurance companies, but not many good ones lol.

thanks

Depends on what you want out of it tbh.. Cheapest or the best..

Cheapest I've come accross is MoreThan but I've no idea on what there payout is like. Direct Line were pretty at settling a claim I made but a little more expensive.

My advice is to check Money Super Market..

It's hard to tell if a company is good or not if you've never made a claim. I just go with the cheapest then if I have to make a claim and they screw me over, I'll put them on my No Swearing! list.

Quidco - few via there which offer cashback.
Just gone to Lloyds TSB for Building and Contents and got £120 back. Not the cheapest quote I had but with the cash back it saved me around £80.

Got a quote with AA.

£118.96 (£133.56 if paying monthly) thats up to 40k contents cover and £0 excess

The following items are included with this policy

* Alternative accommodation
* Basic Contents Cover
* Bicycle cover
* Credit Card Cover
* Flood cover
* Freezer cover
* Garden cover
* Guests' belongings
* Items in Garage cover
* Items outside of house but within boundary
* Leakage of oil
* Leakage of water
* Legal cover
* Legal Helpline
* Loss in Value cover
* Money Cover
* Office equipment at home
* Personal Belongings cover
* Replacement Locks cover
* Sport/Camping items cover
* The insurer offers new for old policies
* Accidental damage cover has been included in the policy

Is that any good?

I use Direct Line - however I need buildings & contents.
The reason I use DL is that the deal directly with repairers etc in the case of a claim.
So there is no me paying and then claiming back, Direct Line pay the builders/suppliers directly.

Remember that cost is not always the best feature to look at.
In today's environment we can all be tempted to go as "cheap as possible" but make sure you get everything you want from a policy.

+1 for Direct Line. Have had to make an accidental damage claim for which I received a higher class replacement. Watch their renewals they always try to lower the value of your covered items and increase the cost.

If you go through moneysupermarket you'll get another £30 cashback. I've been with the AA and they were excellent in handling our claim when we had a break in last year.

thats where i got my quote from shine. Do you know if it is automatically adjusted in the quote price?

If you qualify it will be cash back after 90 days. Check the small print.

I recently switched to the AA, and on paper their home insurance looks like a very good product (price-wise and more importantly covered scenarios) compared to most of the options on moneysupermarket.com et al. But like others have said, it's only really when you come to claim that you'll know whether they are a good insurer or not. *touch wood* this will never happen to you or I.

I've found Liverpool Victoria quite good, but I've not had to make a claim yet (touch wood).

I used them for car insurance and they were woeful, based on my experience of that arm of their insurance business I wouldn't touch any of their other products with a barge pole.

"I'm sorry sir I've spent an hour looking for your claim file in the file room and I can't find it, they haven't filed anything in there for 6 months and the files are piled on the floor"
