Hi,

I am having major problems with these 4850s...

Has this "Stopped responding" error been fixed yet? This has reared its ugly head to me now again. I have re-installed Vista x64 twice. This does not happen at all with an 8800GTS I have. It happens on both my x64 machines. I have tried 8.6, 8.8 and the 8.9 betas, no difference. Both machines are stable and have never BSOD'd before or had this error. The only variable is the graphics cards.

AMD fobbed me off saying that it is my system, which I refuse to believe if it runs fine with a 8800GTS and a HD2600 Pro I have lying around and it survives any stress testing I throw at it.

Are there any solutions? If not, looks like I might get a GTX 280 instead if it is not fixed int he 8.9 final this week whenever it is released. Not happy, the ATi I remember had solid drivers. I cannot use my system for more than 1 hour without this stupid error, and if it happens ingame it BSODs on the driver.

What would you do?
  1. Buy a GTX 280 from here and return the 4850s to where I got them or sell them (they are 8 days old)
  2. Wait for 8.9 to see if that fixes it
It is driving me nuts...

Do the cards run ok seperately?
If thats the case its likely down to drivers and then it may pay to wait, as crossfired 4850's are faster than a GTX 280.

Haven't tried this. I might then disable CrossfireX see if that help tonight.

I would rather not get a GTX 280 for the very reason you have just mentioned.

Do you have the cards running at stock? You have almost an identical system to myself, and the I had that problem only when OCing the cards in CCC.

I am also running on Vista 64 bit, but am currently using the 8.9 betas which were leaked a little while back.

Also, do you get these crashes when you are running your system at stock? Even if it has been prime stable, just give it a try on stock :)

They are at stock, haven't overclocked. I do not want to run the system at stock to be honest just to get these to work. If every other card I have tried works, I can only point the finger to them to be honest.

The only thing that I have changed is Rivatuner to set the fans to 50% at boot. Starting to wonder if this is causing the problem.

Thanks, will give some of it a bash

I also use Rivatuner to up my fan speed with no issues.

The reason I suggest to run the CPU, etc, at stock it only to test whether or not your OC is indeed stable. I am no suggesting keep it like that forever - it's just a way of working out if the cards are actually the problem.

Could be that you PSU is not running like it should, rather than the cards. It's easy to point the finger at the GPU's, but they may not be the actual problem.

Hi.

I was getting this, and it was VERY annoying. Strange as it seems, for me it was down to the power management of the hard drives in Vista x64. And ONLY on my Asus mobo, which I presume is quite similar to yours. Vista called for one of my hard drives (my 2nd storage one which I barely access) to shut down after the preset 20mins, and when it started to spin up the system `hangs` and throws the message `atikmag stopped working`. Simply lengthening the standby timeout in Vista sorted this for me.

Interesting, I always turn off those features. My Maximus Formula had the BIOS it shipped with (0402 IIRC) as I did not want to upgrade as it was frankly rock solid.

Perhaps somewhere down the line there was a fix relating to GPUs.
