Cigarettes - How damaging?

social smoking is worse than people who do it all the time.

you are blatantly trying to look cool when you really dont think its a great idea.
I like social smoking because I like smoking and the taste+nicotine makes me feel great especially after a few beers. However I don't want the health and cost factors of being a proper smoker hence why I don't smoke all the time.

When I started smoking it was on my own by a river with no one else around so I couldn't really be trying to look cool if there was no one else there. I decided after a while I had better things to spend my money on which didn't kill me.

Very.

I doubt very much that anyone smokes regularly "socially" for a long period of time, you're likely to become addicted and become just a smoker.

Smoking doesn't make you cool, how do you not yet know that at 24?

Really does depend on the person.

I've smoked socially for 10 years.

Usually have a few with mates, never smoke at work, at home, by myself, and never have the need/urge to do so. Even took a year break just to prove a point, and I had no trouble at all.

I just like it from a social standpoint, sorta similar to going for a pint.

I'm definitely in the minority though.

- Spots/Blemishes (more so than non-smokers)
I cannot say i have ever come across that, i would say that diet has much more to do with spots and what not, please find some data and i will give it a read
- Breathlessness and emphysema.
Emphyesema is a disease in its own right and you do not have to smoke to get it (although it helps) the chances of getting it when young is very slight and is probably due to bad luck and other factors if you get it so young. Breathlessness is something i don't have although i the more you smoke the more you are gunking up your lungs so it does make sense (regular excercise does eliminate this to a degree though)
- Damaged skin (look around a regular smokers lips)
That isn't the "smoking" but the physical act of taking a drag.
- Easier to pickup illnesses - I notice that the smokers I work with tend to get ill more often, then have really bad coughs when they do.
I have heard this but i have never experienced it, i dont think it holds much water, but if you can find me an article i would be more than happy to give it a read

You are always going to be damaging yourself.
Not always, but i see where your coming from and agree to a certain extent

I'm not going to go 'find' you articles that prove anything.
The only person you are trying to fool here is yourself.... If you smoke, you know its wrong, you know its damaging you. Nothing else really needs to be said.

Do cigars not have the same health/addiction effects as cigarettes?

If you inhale them and smoke them in the same quantity, but people dont smoke them in the same quantities and dont inhale (which is where most problems occur i.e. lungs).

There is still a risk of mouth and throat cancer, but this is easy to spot and tobacco causes less mouth cancer etc so to speak than it does lung cancer.

Watching someone trying to look cool whilst smoking is the most cringeworthy thing ever. I feel embarassed watching young un's with a cigarette in their hands just burning away and the faces they pull when they drag it down - it ironic how uncool trying to look cool can actually be.

Smoking just to look cool is the most poo hole poking thing a guy can do.

I didn't dump all over your statements, i gave my 2 pence and for the more flaky statements i asked where you got your information. It is all very well beign high and mighty but i have not once said start smoking or promoted it in any way (in fact i have done the opposite)

Get off your soap box.

Please get off your pedistal, 1 cigarette cannot and will not give you cancer, Yes there are going to be different "boiling points" in which problems can occur but the earliest i have found is around 70K cigarettes.

He said there was a chance, not a guarantee. Regardless one cigarette has the chance to start addiction, which leads to a slippery slope of possible health complications.

Fact of the matter is that if you don't do it then you don't run the risk of getting some nasty illnesses.

I doubt it would make any difference at that level but occasional smoking leads to regular smoking and then it all starts to go a bit pete tong. The vast majority of smokers get caught this way - just a few then suddenly you're under.

I smoked for 16 years or so 12 a day, gave up a year ago and I'm only annoyed it took me so long to stop the habit.

Now I look at smokers and I feel a bit sorry for them.

I gave up after 13 years of smoking and feel the same way. Had a small relapse due to social smoking and it nearly had me again. Smoking is not someting you want to get caught up in, even cigars.

Get off your soap box.

I never got on my soap box.
I simply stated what I've seen in regards to smoking in my life, my own '2 pence'.
You then start demanding I backup everything I say with with sources, like its some kind of GCSE history exam.

If you smoke, you smoke. But don't try lying to yourself that it isn't hurting you.

Really? Cos you're not addicted. What other possible reason would you do it? Tastes and smells like ****. Is anti-social.

Fill me in...

Because it has a nice effect.

Irregular smokers get a bit of a head-rush and a more noticeable nicotine high.

As opposed to regular smokers who keep having to top up their nicotine just to stay normal.

I also smoke menthols, which are actually very nice. Plus, as cliched as it sounds, and after-sex smoke ROCKS!

And it isn't anti-social when the majority of your friends smoke.

The reduced instances of mouth cancer compared to lung cancer is presumably due to there being fewer cigar smokers proportionally than cigarette smokers. Smoking a cigar as I understand it is quite distinct from smoking a cigarette since as you say you hold the smoke in your mouth for the taste rather than inhaling to the lungs.

Neither appeals to me much and I'd have to say that cigars probably smell a bit worse to me although I haven't really noticed the lingering smell you get with cigarettes as much.

there is so much wrong with this statement i dont know where to start.
