Hi all,

I would like to know what is so special about 'Split Rims'?

Are they just cool or expensive? and why?

Thanks

Split rims are a wheel that is made with two or three parts and has bolts around the rim that holds the parts together. They look more intricate than a one peice wheel and cost more due to manufacturing costs.

Because a split rim wheel is made from three pieces, you can build a wheel that exactly meets your requirements wrt width and offset that may not be available with a one piece wheel. Also the wheel can be easily repaired if a part of it gets damaged, rather than replacing the entire wheel.

What Dogbreath said. It also means the wheel manufacturer doesn't have to keep every combination of offset and width, they can just make universal centres and a selection of rims which are all interchangeable. You can mix and match materials, say use a mag centre and an aluminium rim, don't know if you'd actually do this but it's possible. Lots of flexibility basically.

But is it also a trap for tramps and other things that corrode? Where the different bits meet. I may be lying.

Split rims are generally lighter than similar size one piece alloys as well.
