rockband, guitar hero, etc

No not really. They'll get you used to moving your fingers/hitting drum pads but that's pretty much where it ends.

Guitar, no. Drums, I dunno, never used em. But apparently GH:WT on expert will be very close (according to the blink 182 drummer who helped them with it. take from that what you will).

I guess the whole game makes you think a bit more about the construction of music, but don't expect to turn into Jimi Hendrix :p

It wont help you play the real guitar, but we all know these days that girls only care if you can play guitar hero ;)

Drums are by far the most like the real thing. I've just bought a drum kit after playing Rock Band, and I've been able to just dive straight in to playing basic beats. Even adding the hi-hat control on the left foot wasn't that difficult to come to terms with. Obviously, I have a long way to go with the drums, but it certainly helps you out with basic coordination.

As for guitar. I've played guitar for 13 years, and it's nothing like Rock band. It does mimic the feeling of playing the guitar. You get the same buzz when you pull off a complicated series of notes as you do when you nail that killer lick you've been practising for weeks on the real thing.

A large resounding NO.

You can learn basic drums from these games.

You won't be Dave Grohl, but you should have a basic understanding of keeping rhythm and it's a fun way of learning the foundations of drumming.

With any instrument it's all about practice and practicing your vocal chords won't do you any harm either. :)

As for the guitar, that's a large resounding no :p

I've been playing real drums for a few years now and I've got to say the drumming aspect of RB is pretty damn near to the real thing.

It'll teach you all sorts of basic drumming plus timing, accuracy, some cool grooves and the feeling of being a goddamn rock star when you nail a song :p Joking aside bar the absent hi hat pedal and cymbals (on RB1 kit) the note charts are nigh on perfect (i only really play on expert which is the full note chart) and do a smashing job of recreating songs :)

^ haha, thats true, i think they can help in the actual playing of a guitar for example, as it builds up finger strength (over a long period of time i might add). The most helpful thing about GH or RB in my eyes is rythm, i've seen people go away and at least be able to play a riff properly on a real guitar and go along with a track. So concluding, i think it does help a little (but not much). P.S. sorry about that post, its HUGE!!! :p
