5Dii (for real this time)

It's set to sell for $2699 whereas the Nikon was $2999.

It's not very fast at 3.9fps but the rest of the spec blows my eye!

Which, weirdly enough translates into £1999 RRP for the Nikon and £2299 for the Canon. I'm not sure how Canon came to that conclusion, but they really are screwing us over :p

Edit: The new Powershot SX1 IS looks quite impressive, 28-560mm equiv lens, 4fps full res shooting, 1920x1080p video @ 30fps.

Very nice. I just want to verify the image quality at moderate to high sensitivities.

But beyond the extra MPs I don't see what Canon has really done. In almost every other feature that counts such as AF the D700 looks to be well ahead. Canon seem to be doing the old trick of selling MPs. You don't buy a 3000$ SLR for Video. No one needs more than 12Mp, if you do then you are doing studio work and want the 1DMKii or a medium format - or your simply brainwashed by advertising.

What I'm hoping is for a price war D700 vs 5DII.

I'd say that the D700 and 5DII are both fantastic cameras aimed at different users, the D700 makes a great small full frame sports camera and the Canon 5DII makes an excellent portrait and landscape camera. Then there is the A900 which will surely only be brought by people who already own full frame Minalta glass...

The price diff seems ridiculous. You could get a trans-atlantic flight, stay in new york for a night, buy the camera and still come home better off....

Camera prices aren't set by exchange rates though really, they are priced against what the manufacturers think the market will stand.

On the actual camera front, the fps doesn't bother me as I think it's like choosing a car based on the 0-60 time - ie a bit irrelevant!

I'm a bit concerned by another manufacturer thinking we need HD video on a DSLR though. It's almost like they've let the marketing suits loose. How many people will actually want that feature? It would seem to build in further complexity and expense.

The 'old' 5d took very good pictures, so the new one should be up there too.

It will be interesting to see what the usual review places make of it.

I for one would love an HD video recorder in a 35mm DSLR as i am sure many amature movie shooters will. The ability to use high speed lenses ona full 35mm sensor to give full creative control over depth of field in video is fantastic and something you just can't achieve with a camcorder.

As for extra complexity and expense this just sin't true since we already have Live view, the ability to read continuously from the sensor is already there, all that has to be implemented is the H.264 codec which is surely not to expensive to achieve. The guys over at CHK are implemeting video recording on the 40D with a firmware hack, so it can't be that hard to do!

Looks very nice indeed, I hope that people buying this will realise that they'll need to spend the same money again on lenses to make the most of 21MP, as that amount of resolving power really brings the worst out of glass. (or best, depending whether its a £1k lens or £250)

Looking forward to seeing some reviews.

At least it'll finally stop the semi-weekly rumour threads. Certainly looks like a worthy competitor for the D700, not seen anything about pricing though.

It's not a worthy competitor to the D700 at all and i LIKE Canon !

3.9fps, 9 points AF........

Yes, the ISO is good, FF but no weather sealing and it seems all they have done is put in Digi IV, up the MP and ISO.......3 years this took, 3 Fricking YEARS !!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention is launched at a higher price than the D700 too, even compared to the D700 launched price it's still £300 more ! Currently its not less than a 1DsMKIII.............:(

I am disappointed to say the least, the only cool bit is the HD movie mode, but i doubt i would use that much.

For the people who are dissapointed in the 5D MkII,

Just wondering what features you would have liked which are causing you to be dissapointed? Just curious.

Is this it? I thought they were gonna announce a 7D or something too... 3.9FPS and 9 point AF killed it for me. I'm sure it's a great camera but definately not one for sports. At least, not primarily anyways...

More than 3.9FPS (5FPS at least)
more than 9points AF, D700 has like 50 !

Then thing is that Canon isn't going to use their 1series AF system on the 5D, as it will hurt its sales. But there is a D700 in the market now and it's just doesn't cut it anymore !

We'll have to see how it performs in the real world thou, the ISO performance looks good, it is FF. I mean i would only need it for wedding stuff so i don't actually need weather sealing or 8FPS but more AF points would be welcome !
