Google to Buy Valve!!

christ..

well we know google can handle the content servers, maybe they'll start maxing out our connections ALL the time, here's to hoping

-if this deal goes through at lightning speed, we'll have faster servers for crysis warhead tomrorow  :(

Plus Valve would suddenly have a whole butt-load of funding and access to a fair few extra devs... might actually get 'episodic content' on time...

I don't know whether this is good or bad, google is kind of gaining a monopoly position on the internet this way...

Article written by the industry's biggest fool, Charlie Demerjian.

It's an interesting prospect, but I'll take the rumour with an oceanful of salt.

Bad move if it goes ahead as a lot of publishers would not want to put their stuff on steam as the cost would rise. Already I feel that steam is way too expensive when you consider that they are bypassing the retailer costs so it should be at least 10-15% cheaper even including their bandwidth costs.

I'm not sure about this move either. Google creates the architecture for the internet - search, adverts, mail etc - that's all fine for me. If they start creating the content - games for example - as well as the architecture that starts getting a bit worrying to me.

But don't forget that Steam itself is an advertising medium. Maybe costs would not rise at all for this reason.

I've got to say I'm a little taken back by this news.

Same as snowdog really... I'm not sure what to make of it.

On the other hand, it is The Inquirer.

therefore it is free for the most part.

It's subsidized by advertising revenue, Google are great at monatization, I would rather pay from what I use but not be bombarded with adverising and have all my habits tracked etc.

I read only a few weeks ago that Gabe Newell gets offers every week to buy the company and he's no intention of doing so. Of course, presumably none of the other offers were from Google, but still.
Have to say I hope it doesn't get sold - Valve are doing very well as they are.
