4870 X2 Temps

I think ati will fix this in the next driver release which should come soon. I think that link i put on shows you how to do it manually though. Also what drivers are you using with the card if its the ones on the disc i think they will be out dated.

Happens to mine every boot without fail, start up and it's idling in the 80s, start something fullscreen 3d and quit, even for 1 second and boom down it goes to the mid 60s. With any luck the 8.9s will fix it, otherwise it's just a minor annoyance >_>

Yeah sounds like it! well least im not the only one! Also i have the latest drivers installed. Lets hope ATI fix this in there nest release!

Thanks

Weird. I have my Sapphire 4870X2 with stock fans running at 40% (up from 27%) and it idles between 43 and 46 degrees. Doesnt go over 75 under load. But then I have a cosmos s case with excellent ventilation.

On a side note, what an amazing card! Amazingly smooth at 1920*1200, everything maximum in games like Stalker Clear Sky and Crysis! Love it!

Mine seems to vary a lot from 75 to 88 C on idle, other core is 55 to 60 C, My case also has a 120mm fan blowing across the card.

I think I'm going to change the stock tim and add a 120mm fan in place of the stock fan.

Yeah good card but not amazing if youve got these temp problems, total disspointment i dont pay £375 for this stuff to be like this its annoying!

I sure hope ATI sorts this out with newer drivers, one core constantly running at 750 MHz and RAM running at 900 MHz is going to damage the GPU in the end.

Thanks

Stock fan speed gives me an idle temp in the 80's. I've set up 2 profiles in CCC, one for 40% fan speed and one for 100%.

Idles at around 40C now, at 40% speed. I flick it over to 100% for the most graphics intensive games, which gives around 65C under load.

Overall not bad at all, if you don't stick with the default fan speed.

The new rivatuner is out and allows for good fan control on the 4870x2 now. Have you tried what was said above. ie as soon as you log onto windows start up a game and then quit out. This is dropping the 2 cores to 2d speeds for a lot of people. Rivatuner link below.

Hi yes il try that. Ive just made a profile on CCC the temp of the core is 55 C with a clock of 507 MHz and memory at 500, fan speed is a 35% rather than the usual 27 to 28. It seems to be ok now but the GPU activity shows about 188% in CCC, im conserned about this? is this ok?

Never used a dual card but when on the desktop my gpu activity is usually 0%. If the temps are still staying low on both cores it must not be reading the activity properly.

Its a bug in the ATI drivers..... It appears that on first boot one GPU gets stuck in 3d mode with 3d clocks and 3d voltage.

You have to give it a nudge so it remembers that it should actually be in powersave mode. You can either start a 3d app and exit it, both gpus will drop to 2d mode and will be much cooler even with standard fan speed, or create a profile in CCC called low power or something, then manually edit it so you change the idle memory clocks from 500 mhz to 450.....

When you activate that profile it will reset both gpus to 2d mode and temps will drop without the need to start a 3d app. Handy if you want low temps on your desktop.

Mine idles at 62c if I do this.
