Far Cry...still great!

Farcry was the first game I played with physics. I spent ages manipulating barrels up to the top of steps just so I could roll them down again. Also it has the best sand under water textures I've seen in a game, certainly for the time anyway.

awful game after the first hour and a half, worst alien/monster designs i've ever seen and the a.i is appalling it shoots you in the head with a handgun from 3 miles away through an entire wood

crysis destroys it in every possible way, especially the a.i

it does a have a couple of decent mods for it though that are worth a play. these being matto 3 & 4 and the delta sector and the engine has held up extremely well, this looks as good as cod 4 in my opinion

Agree totally. I quite enjoyed it until the muppet mutants arrived, then I was like 'wtf'? Turned it straight off.

Much prefer Crysis.

Yeh but what about the muppet floaty tentacley alien things in Cysis?
And as for that zero mavity floaty level.....it was the worst out of place level since Zen!

also dont forget the all important "r_hdrrendering 7" command, that really kicks things up a notch.

How is HDR with AA now?
Last time I checked, even with a card that supports hdr and aa, the game would show as 1 giant artifacted land due to it not supporting AA and HDR at once...

If I have to choose between em I'm pretty sure I prefer AA above hdr...

its supported aa + hdr for years, never had any trouble with artifacts, just force aa in the driver with the aa compatibility mode set and turn hdr on in game

well played it for a bit got till lvl 5 or something like it.

good game like in it the annoying part is that enemy can see you trough the some building thinking that game is not of the new ones u would thing patches would have fix that but no

anyone tried any of the coop mods for farcry? i can find 2 through google, just thought it would be a good laugh to run through it with a mate or 2 over lan.

anyone tried farcry coop?

I never completed it. I got to the bit where you're escaping from the final complex and there's a big open area with dozens of mutants in it. I just kept getting cut to ribbons from miles away. :(

PK!

Quite average really, looks dated against games from the same timeframe too. (Half-Life 2)

I thought Far Cry was a few months before HL2? I recall playing Far Cry on my GF3 Ti500, but played HL2 when I'd had my 6800U for a while. Maybe it wasn't one whole development cycle in difference, but I'm certain Far Cry was the earlier game.

Just checked Wackypedia, its close enough to the truth....

Farcry was out in March 2004, Half Life 2 in November 2004. Pretty big gap, lots of tech changes happening at that time if I remember rightly... not that I could afford them then :p

IMO Far Cry looks better than (vanilla) HL2 when run in 64bit mode with HDR.

Although, I can see why some might prefer HL2 as it is a bit 'grittier' compared to the somewhat OTT tropics and models seen in FC. People who prefer the HL2 style could do a lot worse than try the "Cold" renderering mode in FC.

I think this is the case, personally I hate gritty style gfx, which makes hl2 look a bit worse in my eyes...

I prefer the gritty dystopian look of Half Life 2. I think people here are mixing up graphical proficiency with art direction. It's hard to make a jungle look natural and interesting compared to urban settings. It's only with Crysis that we've seen a pretty good portrayal of tropical settings in games.

I loaded Farcry up again recently.

Set to 1920x1200 everything on max.
Looked very good especially considering how old the game is.

I do like the tropical setting, the foliage, sand and sea all look good, and it is sunny so you can see what your doing.

No need to tape a flashlight to your gun and crawl around some muddy brown basement like most shooters of the era.
