Right,

So I'm hoping to get Vigins 10Mb fibre optic broadband but wondered what you guys thought of it first. It'll be used primarily for gaming.

It comes with a free wireless router and modem (I think) however I'm looking to get my own, but I've little knowledge in this and was wondering if you could suggest a modem & router for gaming with virgin cable broadband?

Any help appreciated :)

I have never had any problems with my 20Mb broadband, i get great pings and always get the speed i pay for. Also you should know, that although the latest VM adverts make a big deal about it being fibre optic, its been that way for a long time, and the fibre only goes up to a certain point along your street, the last few hundreds meters is still a copper cable.

You have to use virgins modem, you don't realy have a choice about that. As for a router though, the best router ive used is the linksys WRT54GL with tomato firmware, it gives me everything i need and ive had no problems with it, unlike my old netgear router.

The modem virgin supply is more than good enough, and as mentioned you're not allowed to use your own;) (I think they are currently supply Virgin/Ambit 255 ones, which are pretty good*).

Router wise you can use whatever you want, if you're getting one free with the deal I would try that for a while, otherwise I'll give another vote for the linksys WRT54GL series with custom firmware ;)

*I get about 10-12ms pings to some servers with the 250 which is, I believe the same basic modem (just the older blue case rather than the black Virgin one).

Had my upgrade from 4 to 10mb a few weeks back and it's as stable as it was before. No noticable packet loss or high pings. I aren't using a router though. Connected directly to the modem.

Mu mum just got the 10 mb deal too! im rather impressed with it, its very very quick (we used to have 512k adsl) especially with downloads (got all my games off steam really quickly).

The free router isnt too bad either, it hasnt got the best range in the world (then again we used to use a draft N router which impressed me a lot) but we've had no problems putting 4 or 5 computers on the network all wirelessly :)

As far as the internet connection goes, I find it very stable and decent speeds.

But, you mentioned gaming. The router that they provide you with normally times out when you refresh a large ammount of servers and you cant change the firmware to the latest netgear one because they use a special one.

It's great for gaming. I've got 20meg and never have any problems. You might want to get a different router though.

If you use torrent programs definitely get something like a WRT54GL with Tomato, most routers will choke on torrents otherwise due to the amount of connections it usually opens and not always restore straight away.

You can see the in game pings on mine during TF2 when we're both on next, Turtles. I'm on VM 20mbit package with Netgear router.

i've got 2mb virgin which is fine for gaming. the modem is an old motorola from a few years back and my router is a very old belkin 54g. get an average ping of 15 on most UK cod2,cod4 and bf2142 servers :D

it's not as stupid as you might think, routers that can prioritise packets means i can keep a more stable ping when playing games online whilst someone else is also using the connection downloading a torrent etc etc. not all routers are made the same.

i'm very happy with my d-link dgl4300 which had a crude form of QOS for outbound traffic. This router is discontinued thought now.

It is pretty daft, considering that something like the WRT54GL will do more QoS than you can shake a stick at for a third of the price.

exactly what i have at home but mine only a 2mb line due to stingey parents.

still gets 20 - 25 ping on most cod4 servers in this country.

get a job and fut the rest of the bill..?

when i was 14, i was paying for an extra line, and ISDN :o

i was very happy with mine until yesterday...when it decided to just not power any ports for longer than 30 mins! only about 18 months old too, thats the second D-Link router that has broken on me. Will not by them again!

just ordered the Linksys one to try now :D
