Id love to buy a PS3 but i keep reading in places that there are 40, 60, 80 and even a 120GB version, now apart from the size of the hard drive is there anything else different about these variants ?

Not anymore. Since the original 60gb was discontinued the only differences between the different SKU's has been the size of the HDD.

The original 60GB ones had PS2 BC, 4 USB ports and card readers - since they have discontinued that all models have 2 USB ports, no card readers and no BC so the only thing different is the HDD size - but you can upgrade that yourself really easily anyway!

No thank you, thanks anyway, id rather buy new, nothing personal but ive had way too many bad 2nd hand experiences, that and i love new shiny things lol :D ordering my 80gb as we speak, mmmm god of war 3 :p

Oh i will, been wanting a PS3 for quite a while, ever since my 360 made a small mushroom cloud when it eXploded in the middle of the night playing gears lol

:D:D:D

Make sure you take your radiation medicine !

Just get the cheapest deal on the PS3 you can. If you want to upgrade the HDD at a later date it is pretty simple, doesn't void your warranty, and a 320gb disk will cost about £60.

Just out of curiosity why do the newer models no longer have PS2 BC?

Thanks.

IIRC it just costs so much to implement, i.e they were basically throwing a ps2 in the ps3 casing as they hadn't sorted a better way of emulation, no doubt someone will prove I'm wrong though:)

Nope youre right, they did the same with the PS2 until they managed to get PS1 emu working. The original PS3 had both PS2 Cpu/Gpu, then they cut out the Cpu and emulated it. Now both chips have gone and Sony May/may not be working on full PS2 emulation.

To the OP, the most important thing not mentioned is that the new 80Gbs have both 65nM cell/Rsx so use less power and produce less heat than even the 40Gbs and far less than the original 60Gbs. If i was 100% sure i dont want to play PS2 games anymore i would sell mine and get a new 80Gb. I think i will wait for the PS3 slimline though lol.

Emulation will never arrive now, it's a hardware issue.
What they are rumoured to be doing is releasing modified versions of PS2 games on the PlayStation Network for download.
I don't see what the fuss is about personally, I have one of the 60GB models with BC and I've never ever played a PS2 game on it.
Onwards and upwards is what I say! ;)

Btw, it's worth noting that ALL versions of the PS3 are compatible with PSOne games.

is the RSX been reduced to 65mn yet. I know they said it was coming but not seen any mention of it actually happening. Im waiting for clarification of that before getting one. Makes a big difference with heat output.

My brother has a 60 gig and the fans kick in quite often. Ive heard once the new version (ie 65 mn on both rsx/cell come into play this wont happen).

Well no, the 80gb comes with the dualshock controller instead of the standard sixaxis and the 160gb will come with something like £50 worth of downloadable content.

apparently so

So we know that the new 80GB version of the Sony PS3 was upgraded with a larger hard drive. We did not know however that it would be more energy efficient than the 40GB version.

It seems that the Core does use less energy than the smaller hard drive version. A user from Slickdeals forum connected his 80GB PlayStation 3 up to a Kill-a-watt and was shocked at his findings.

The 80GB PS3 used 130 watts of power while playing MGS4, whereas the 40GB version used 155.2 watts of power. That’s not all, on idle the 80GB version uses 111.9 watts, whereas the 40GB model used 125.8 watts when idle on the XMB.

There are man theories as to why this is; the most popular is that Sony is now using the 65nm RSX chips. These chips are cheaper as well as being more reliable.

As yet Sony has not responded to these rumors, but that should only be a matter of time when they do.

Might just be that the 80GB drives are more energy efficient?
I reckon going down to 65nm would give a better power drop than 14w.

edit: Actually forget that theory, a quick check shows that the efficiency of a HDD offers minimal difference in watts.
