ok my qx6800 runs way to hot, idles 45-49 accross the 4 cores and loads at between 60-67 accross the 4 cores with a AC7, budget shouldnt be a problem but id like to stay under £100, but i dont really wanna go TRUE as i heard they are a pain to install and not good unless you lap them, which im not prepared to do. what are my other option, i know of water but this would be my first water, is it easy?? should i buy a premade kit??? please OCuK help me :D

That isn't very hot?

My Q9550 idles at about 42 - 46 across all the cores with a lapped Thermalright Ultra 120 and 120mm fan.

apparently according to the all temp guides on the net 65+ is to hot for a qx6800 b3 stepping. its TJmax is 95 and according to intel the thermal spec is 54.8 so 65 is considered the hottest :(

...Yes, thats theyre Thermal spec at stock....presumably your chips clocked?..

And those temps seem fine to be honest, you've got four cores running together, all at a decent speed, they're going to get hot unless you throw 2 tonnes of air through them.

Only thing you could do is re-apply some Thermal paste maybe, if you have some that is, but that takes a week or so to settle in anyway.

Or, if you have to, change the cooler as you suggested.

I also wouldn't regard it as being too hot. My Q6600 with a vCore of 1.3v idles at around the same but can hit 75 when priming, that's what I call hot :D

I'd get the Noctua cooler as its meant to cool well and is good build quality.

When you change cooler check that yours is flat.

So what is the hottest temp a q6600 g0 should prime at...?

well depends.. the more vcore you are using the more chance to damage the CPU at high temps.. but I havent seen anyone fry one yet.. In general 75c but are issues at high clock frequencies where you need to keep the temps lower to prime (seen this on a number of CPU's now)

Why does it matter?

I find people that get obsessive over processor temp's very, very strange. It can safely run up to 100 degrees or so. Let it get on with it.

Saw my quad hit 100 when my old AC7 had the pin pop out (hate those push pin systems!) and practically fall off the processor -was priming at the time as well so temp just shot straight up.

PC shut down, checked and remounted and ran fine since.

People do get excessive over their temps. My Q6600 would hit 75 at 3.8ghz under prime, but didnt stop me running IBT!

OP: Have a go at re-seating your heatsink - after all there always the possibility that you applied to much TIM or did not tighten the heat sink correctly.

100 degrees is not safe IMO and will be doing nothing for your stability. I agree that the TJ Max is quite allot higher than the OP's load temps but that doesn't mean that he should work to get them lower.

TRUE is easy to install, easier than old socket clips, by far

even if it does stick out of my case by about 2mm

runs my q6600 @ 3ghz, load (well, COH for a few hours) 68-70 degree's, with no fan on it

i remember my 2500m barton, clocked to 2.7ghz, but if it went over 48 degrees, system crash :p

that's when i needed watercooling :p
