2008 Italian GP - Race 14/18

On a side note, there is a fantastic article over on bbc, about Alonso, Ferrari, Raikonnen and a number of conspiracy theories.

Interesting read and as far fetched as the story sounds of Kimi being giving a bung of a years salary to assist Massa to the championship and retire at the end of the season to make way for Alonso, I hope it is true as I cant understand why else Ferrari would extend a drivers contract who really isnt interested in the sport...

Kimis a very very good driver, but hes never been a team player and doesnt gives 2 hoots about anyone but himself - no doubt he needs a large incentive and as a Kimi fan its a shame to see him go but hes just done nothing this year to confirm Ferraris faith in him...

Of course, there is nothing wrong with being selfish. The best F1 drivers have been selfish - Senna comes to mind. However, you have to be able to back it up by getting good results and outperforming your team mate. I think Kimi just seems to have lost interest.

Based on this year's results, it seems strange that Ferrari would reward him with another year on the top salary (for F1 drivers). But then again, stranger things have happened - Honda pay J. Button one of the higest salaries in F1 and look what he does.

The last race was kind of strange though, because once the track started to dry up, Kimi became the fastest guy on the track. Its almost as if he had other things on his mind for the first 75% of the race and then in the last 25%, he thought, "Right, better get a move on."

I would certainly much rather have Alonso, given that you know pretty much what you are getting (someone who wants to win, is fast and is currently the most decorated driver in F1), rather than the unpredicatable driver that Kimi seems to have become.

I dont think that the lesser wing looks that bad. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about, but I'm sure everybody shall get used to the new look of the cars very quickly.

What a load of nonsense. Nobody is going to give a driver £30m on the off chance that he will give a position to his team-mate which could possible help win the WDC especially considering he is nearly always behind massa and hamilton anyway.
Surely kimi just wants time to redeem himself as this year has done him a lot of damage and has really taken a lot of the shine of last years WDC win which was covered in luck to begin with!

Its possible that Kimi might want to redeem himself in 2009. However, why are Ferrari prepared to give him a chance when they have Alonso waiting in the wings, who we know will probably outperform Kimi in the same car and probably for a lower salary?

If Alonso didnt exist, then finding a replacement for Kimi might've been a problem and giving him another chance in 2009 wouldve been the best option. However, Alonso does exist and is raring to go.

Well Alonso is alonso and brings a lot of baggage. It's very possible that alonso would lose the plot like he did last year at Mclaren. The guy can't take getting beaten and Massa is more than capable of outpacing him.
We also don't know any of the details of the contracts. Maybe kimi had a clause stating he could renew it if he was WDC or won X amount of races. Maybe he has agreed to a performance clause for next year etc.

McLarens secret weapon for the night race in singapore:

Quality :)

Back to the Kimi situation. Even being a Kimi fan, I cant understand whats gonig through his mind for the last couple of races. It does seem like hes lost intrest when he had work to do. As said above once the track got dry in Imola, he was fastest. I think he set the fastest lap of anyone by 0.300's iirc.

If hes admitted to himself that his title chance is pretty much over, he has to support Massa all the way to make sure that a Ferrari driver wins the title. This will make the team a lot happier and overall morale will be good which can only benefit Kimi and the team for next season.

I read somewhere that 2 races to go last season he was 17 points behind? I didnt think it was that much. Hes 21 points behind with 4 to go. If he really thinks that he can still win it, he definatly needs to start bucking his idea's up in qualifying and getting up the front. No point qualifying 4th - 5th with 2 McLarens and Massa in front of him even if he will be going slightly longer. I would like to see him going for pole, even if it make him slighty lighter, this way he has a chance to rule the race.

Message from me to Kimi....

"Buck your idea's up son... you did it last season, you can do it this year! Ive got money on you ;))

The winners trophy for the Singapore race.

Not convinced its a looker, but Im glad someone is making new and interesting trophies. Im fed up of seeing people given boring metal Santander logos as trophies. Bring back the traditional trophies unique to each event, like at places like Britain and Monaco.

From what I remember, Button, was the 4th highest paid driver in F1. I think it was said during the commentary on ITV1 or I read it on BBC Sports website.

2007 earnings:

Button is only paid so well because of the money he had to pay to get out of his deal with Williams. Honda didn't want to be seen as breaking contracts so the buy out was left to Button who then has it paid back via a larger salary than he would have got.

Honda basically bought out the contract for him but officially Honda didn't steal a driver.

Alonso would easily outdo Massa in the same car.
And the baggage we seen last year was due to favoritism for a rookie over a 2 time world champion by his 'team'. I'd go in a huff too.

I see. So it's not actually backed up by anything other than "here's what we think they're earning".

Hell, even if he is earning a fortune to drag that recalcitrant heap of junk around the racetracks of the world - maybe it's a case of better the devil they know for Honda. At least with Button they know he's capable of driving a decent car if one comes along.

Rubbish. Think back to what happened at McLaren or have you forgotten already? - favourtism in the team was quite overt for all to see.
Before LH even started the season everyone knew he was like a son to RD, and subsequently he was treated as such, pushing FA to the side (not the way many teams would treat a current WC as he was at the time).

Like many on here I am amazed Kimi's got a drive at Ferrari next year. I had been hoping FA would get signed because it would really liven things up in the drivers WC. Two genuine rivals in the two quickest cars - no team hierarchy - no team orders, could have been great days ahead. Never mind.
