OFFICIAL Catalyst 8.9's out.

Well just installed 8.9's and it was a very painful process, going from the default install drivers that came with my 4870X2

First time I tried to install them on top of the current drivers, after install had very blurry screen as if someone had turned the contrast right down, couldn't run control centre, couldn't change to get both my screens working.

Fixed it by uninstalling all ATI drivers from the system used driver sweeper, then re-installing the 8.9's after that.

Have run 3D Mark Vantage and have a score of 14193(GPU 14336, CPU 13783), which I believe is around about the same as I had with the default drivers, though didn't make a note of the old scores so can't be precise.

The GPU temperature though I'm sure has dropped down within CCC, If I remember correctly it used to reports 82c, but now it's reporting 60c without any load.

Think I will try some auto tune to see if I can get any increased performance, as I couldn't before, I just used to get tearing and then the system would reboot

Taff

Just thought I would point out that using driver sweeper doesn't seem to entirely remove the settings from the previous install. I used the ATI uninstall utility in add/remove programs, then rebooted into safe mode and ran driver sweeper. Rebooted again.

Installed 8.9 and it still remembers my overscan settings from the previous install as well as not detecting that is HDMI and not DVI. I've just swapped the cables back on my amp now and will just have the PC connected via the "DVD" HDMI on Onkyo 606. Now I have HDMI audio again.

I can't be bothered to reformat at the moment. My blu-ray player will have to go on the VCR "HDMI"

Slight hijack - just bought a 4870 (expecting it early next week). I'm coming from an 8800GT, so naturally, I don't have ATI drivers to upgrade... So, should I install these, or try the 8.8s instead? Seems there are issues with every driver release these days, but what's the general consensus on this latest set?

Just get the 8.9s, you shouldn't really have a problem unless there is a specific issue with your pc setup and the drivers.

Remember, forums generally give a negative impression of pretty much everything, because most people will tend to post comments only if they are having problems.

A lot of people said they had problems with the 8.8s when they came out, but my HD4870 is working perfectly fine with them.

BTW, make sure you clear out your nvidia drivers properley though, e.g. uninstall drivers > reboot to safemode > run driver cleaner and driver sweeper > reboot into normal windows > install drivers.

lol I think the fact that 10/10 people in this thread had teething troubles and similar issues, speaks for itself, ATI drivers are not without problems. :p

Must say this is the first time I've ever had issues with the ati drivers both 8.8's and 8.9's, actually come to think of it only with the 4870 x2 card as well. It doesnt bother me that much as the card runs fine but the driver install/uninstall seems to be causing issues with some people where others are fine.

Just going to be more cautious now next month for the next set.

Vantage crashes for me while loading the first graphics test... i'll try re-installing it and if no joy then I may just backup my savegames and do a fresh install. It's really weird that CCC hates my HDTV being enabled when I load it up though... it just hangs there until I disable the second display, upoin which point it springs back into life with a joyous cackle. I wonder if Ultramon is causing an issue with it...

Err I've had no problems with any driver set!

well apart from the rather infamous issues regarding dual screens and vista x64, i've had no problems either. admittedly i haven't installed the 8.9s yet but with all previous versions i've just installed over the top without issue. :)

What's the Vistz x64-bit dual screen issue... similar to the problem i'm having with 32-bit?

nah, i'm getting random "atikmdag.sys has crashed and recovered errors". it's happened with both my current 4850 and my old 3850. the card is rock solid in every single way with just one monitor enabled. also it works fine in xp with dual screens. it's just vistax64/dual screens that is the problem. some people have suggested disabling aero so i'm trialing that at the moment.... :p (but vista with no aero is so damned ugly :( :p)

I know I'm late to the thread, but thanks for the heads up LoadsaMoney. I'm downloading now.

I was having an issue with some Catalyst service hanging on boot with Catalyst 8.8 under Vista x64.

I have noticed something interesting in my dual screen adventure in Vista x64

1) Updating BIOS reduced frequency dramatically (went from 1 every hour or so to mayeb once a day)
2) Switching from a VGA interface to HDMI on second monitor reduced it to nothing in a few days now
3) Tugging on the VGA cable sharply when it was being used resulted in an error

Is this coincidence?

Have you tried swapping the cable just for ****s and giggles?

I am going to run on HDMI anyway as I am replacing my 32" Samsung for a Sony 40X3000 (not bad for a 2nd PC screen , we have the 46 downstairs too)

I guess the key question is if people having the problems are using VGA or DVI/HDMI is what I was trying to say?

Cheer OP Downloaded. Installed got a few more FPS in ARMA and everyone knows you can never have enough fps in arma. :)

Usual deinstall safemode driver sweeper ccleaner reboot and installed xp pro 32bit.
