Just looking for a few of your favourite insurance companies to try.

Can you guys reel off a few names of companies that you think are pretty good for new drivers?

Churchill (best quotes i've had so far)

I think directline were decent for me when I was 17. Definately try Bell, they currently quoting the best for me atm.

TBH it's a bit of a lottery who's good for you and who's not, depending on your postcode, what car it is, how old you are, what your relationship with god is like and what you had for dinner two weeks ago wednesday.

What I normally do is go on gocompare/confused/moneysupermarket, see who's the cheapest and ring up the top two directly and see what they'll do without getting the agency involved.

Last time Elephant were my cheapest quote through confused.com, going direct to them was over £100 cheaper.

Haha very true, go via gocompare.com and wittle down some options. Then speak to the best ones direct.

Quinn Direct.

Third party fire and theft.

£1100 for a year (1.25l Fiesta 16V Zetec)

Free breakdown cover

Free third-party insurance on any other car (as long as you are not a named driver) as long as it is not a 4x4, a two-seater sports car and has an engine < 3.5litre

Bargain imo.

try..

confused.com
elephant.co.uk
moneysupermarket.com

also, add your mum or dad as a named driver, can knock quite a large lump off! -even if in reality, they never drive it.

That doesn't take anything off. Why would adding an experienced driver as a secondary, minority driver take money off a premium or reduce the risk in the eyes of the insurer?

What you are trying to talk about is 'fronting', where your parent(s) is the registered keeper and driver and you (son or daughter) are down as a named driver.

This is also illegal and can cause serious damage to your parents NCB, should the worse happen.

I've used Tesco and Elephant over the years.

But try confused for a comparison of several companies.

This is true. But bledd is right, some insurers knock money off for adding an experienced driver as a named driver, I did this a couple years ago, adding my girlfriend to the policy reduced it by about £70. The policy was still under my name.

It takes a few hundred off adding my mother as a NAMED driver, adding my dad adds £200 though...

It is very much a lottery.
This thread will quickly fill up with a massive list of insurance company's - because at some point they will all have been "the best" for someone.

My very first insurance was actually with Eagle Star of all company's - many, many moons ago.

Noel Dazely brokers, you'll find them through Google. Smashed all of my other quotes to pieces. Will take a week to get back to you but they do all the donkey work for you and you can pay in 3 big payments instead of a one off hit for a very small fee, unlike most who only offer a monthly payment option with a 10% fee added on.

EDIT: Also, add your Mum as it lowers the premium. Just make sure you are the main driver so you earn the NCB.

Obviously you know nothing about insurance. If I add my mother my insurance goes down/up depending on company (she has an SP30). If I add my brother it goes down by around £600.

OP. Try moneysupermarket.com and see what they come out with, they normally do quite well, also try DirectLine and any others you can think of that don't come up on MSM. :)

Quinn Direct, Bell and Norwich union in that order from when I was 17

Norwich union just gave me a quote 400 odd cheaper than bell and I thought bell were cheap!

Remember add a parent as a named driver, will save you a fair whack.

Your a mile out, adding my mother as a named driver takes on average £150-200 off my insurance, there's nothing illegal about it and its one of the best ways to get money off a quote.

It does, adding my maw as a second driver knocked a couple of hundred quid off my insurance. and nobody is talking about fronting.

Didnt realise quinn had all those stupid restrictions on their DOC, Im with Bell had to pay extra but as far as I am aware they dont have any restrictions just has to be a privately owned car thats insured.

Btw Ecarinsurance were by FAR the cheapest for me 1050 for a year at 17 on my own.

ecar were good for me and its nice being able to check on other cars very quickly if you want an upgrade.

I started with elephant as i rang admiral and they changed the online quote so i just did the same with elephant and bought at the online price.

I did have mymotorquote, they were cheap but very very bad, even if they were 50% cheaper i would never use them again ever.
