Hello all, basically today somebody hacked my girlfriend's msn account one way or another, and has managed to change her password, and secret questions etc.

This leaves us unable to get her account back, and the microsoft website is proving to be thouroughly useless!

From this page https://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/alertus.aspx we get passed to here https://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=liveidv1&market=en-gb with the instuctions of "Please complete the Passport support form on the Helpful Information for Microsoft Passport Network page."

Thats all well and good, except the passport support form appears to be fereaking invisible! Either that, or I'm going blind.

If anybody can tell me what I'm doing wrong that would be great, and probably score me some points with the GF :)

She didn't respond to the spam emails that were going around a few weeks ago about you've asked for a password change, click the links to confirm or cancel

Hotmail password recovery = more or less impossible. I only got mine reset because it was linked to my xbox live account.

Conversely, I've heard of some other cases where MSN accounts have been hacked and Microsoft have been pretty helpful. They'll most likely ask your girlfriend to provide details like emails saved on her account, names of her contacts, etc.

There is no way to "hack" a Live account other than guessing the secret question. You also can't change the question without knowing what it is currently. So either it is someone who knows her, or she had a rather easy answer to the question. This happened to me once and Microsoft were very helpful throughout the entire process and I got my account back within a few days. They do indeed ask questions like when the last time you accessed the account, when it was created, what was the last email you sent, some of your contacts etc. Turned out it was some 12 year old from a game I had been playing, apparently I had annoyed them somehow! I learnt my lesson pretty quick! Now my secret question answers are a little more complex :p

Just to add to this really.
We see a lot of threads pop up with "xxxxx Account Hacked".
If it were possible to hack these accounts then they would be done - en mass.
It is a matter of educating people to use both secure passwords and secure "secret questions".
Then of course warning them about phishing email and also websites that may install a keylogger etc.
Because finding out one of these is the only way to "hack" these accounts.
