When you buy a car privately what do I need to do or who do I need to inform?

You send off the V5 (Logbook) to the DVLA with details of the change of owner.

Don't forget insurance to start when you pick the car up, not the day after, you can get insurance started over the phone in no time. (NB: Not actually no time, as you have to speak, which takes time)
