Ocuk Online Rock Band!!

I'll throw my 2p in.

I suggest in order :
Drums
guitar
bass/2nd guitar
(keyboards)
vocals

The other MAIN thing is that you have got to sort a structure out for the song eg

4 click intro
intro riff 4 bars
verse 4 bars
4 bars (same as into)
verse 4 bars
chorus 4 bars
verse
chorus
lead solo 4 bars
etc etc

Because somebody needs to come up with main riffs and a proper structure which is obviously done better on a guitar.
Thats why I've put bass or 2nd guitar as the 3rd thing to record.
Logical thinking and also experience of this type of forum recording.

Ah, there was me genuinelly thinking I'd thought of it first. Should've known better!

To keep the ball rolling I've solo'ed over the main section of the other song we were doing. I know the main section , but I only did this cos I was bored, a bit lacking in energy to do much else at the moment.

It started off okay but lacks direction and momentum, but meh. I added another solo to try and cover up some of what I would call mistakes. I can do better I'm sure.

Edit: Totally not sure what I've done there, actually. Style might be a bit ruinous, maybe should have gone for something a bit harder? My mix is crap too, panned it hard right, level probably too low, also getting some weird distortion on it I didn't quite know how to get rid of? Opinions? If you think it's whack, just tell me straight out. Get me and my street lingo!

Edit 2: Yup, definitely buggered it up. Too crowded, not a defining moment in there, two guitars instead of one are annoying. Well thought I'd stick it up here anyway...

Was my drum sample ok?

I'm very tempted to record my version of the Red Dwarf theme tune on it !!!:D:D:D:D (He/She hates Red Dwarf) Just kidding mate.

It's pretty cool, I'm not sure what I can do on top though. If you added a layer of synth I'm sure some power chords would go well.

I'll try and add a rythm tune to the drum track tonight, then we can take it from there, with a bass and lead guitar, then maybe some synth. Lozzick, I've added you to the skydrive folder, so you should receive an email about that giving you access. Robosapien, that sounds pretty good. The main problem still is my dodgy timing, so I think if we start this new song, we can get it sounding really good.

How much start do you want? I was gunna do a 3 minute version of that 1 min thing i sent you guys. I can quite happily add as much as you want to it. synths or w/e

I dono how it works. will people cut it up and do what they want with it or...like i dont wanna make too much of a tune with synths and drums and make it impossible to edit or split up.

I've been messing with it there, and if you have about a quarter as the first type of drums, then the rest as the second type, and then maybe add a kind of outro at the end. About 3 minutes long should be fine. I might not actually get a chance to do anything tonight, but I'll get something up tomorrow, although if someone else wants to do a rhythm then go ahead.

you always start drums then bass then rhythm guitar rhythm sections first to keep track tight.

Perhaps in your Uni.

I'll put it simply.
If the OCUK collective are writing their own song then someone needs to come up with some guitar riffs - 4 (8) bars verse, 4 (8) bars chorus, 8 bars mid 8 etc etc.
You could do it with bass but guitars are much better for writing on therefore put the guitar track down next and let everything follow.
If you then went into a big proper studio to record it then I would have drums, bass and rhythm all recording at the same time.
We are on an internet forum, guitar comes next.

I think he's talking strictly about doing it over forums, in which case he makes a good point - how many song's are written straight out on a bass? Most are done on guitar or piano.

There's nothing to stop us putting the guitar first roughly on the drums, then whoever is doing bass can get the song structure in their heads, then record bass tightly onto drums, then re-do the guitars on top.

KK i can do bass with the drums if you like...it would still mean you could place a bass guitar on without problems. What i mgoing to do is 5 minutes of drum stuff...each sample is 1 minute long
then you can all cut it up till your hearts content.

If you add some bass, then it will give us a tune to work with, and since I seem to be lacking in ideas at the moment, that's probably best.

P.s. should get an email now.

That's cool lozzick, I'll leave the cutting and pasting up to somone else though, I've found it's a nightmare to do it seemlessly and keep in sync!

It's so great to see people collaborating like this, I can't wait to see how this new song turns out!

To add to the guitar vs bass first debate, it obviously stems from the overlap of recording and writing. But yeah, as I said, there's nothing to stop us re-recording things properly from the ground up once the writing is done. With a cover this shouldn't be a problem....

Did someone say they would contribute some bass guitar at some point? If they could add some to that other song just to test the water that would be immense.

Also, Neoni, are you up for recording a real kit at some point then?

Vocals, dmpoole?

You always bring up uni, why dont you try the ******* entire world of studios numpty.... always think i know right cos im in Uni, im still learning myself, grow up.

As for recording it should be the same principle online....

EDIT: saying that ive done recording before where the bass goes later on in the track but it sounds absolutely poor, and very sloppy sounding.

Calm down people. I don't think it matters too much, since at the moment were just trying different things and seeing how they come out. We'll let lozzick put in a bit of bass to begin with for this one, then get it done and see how it goes, then we can decide whether it is better for bass to come first, or guitar.
