Put petrol in my diesel

A mate put a gallon (ish) of petrol in his 1.9TD golf 150. We just got a few jerry cans of diesel in it, and started it up. It stuttered and smoked a bit when first started, and he kept it over half full for a few months.

No long term problems.
Dont bother having the tank drained.

your advice is not sound because unless I am getting mixed up you are talking about a conventional turbo DERV engine not a common rail.

Brim it with diesel, that little petrol won't matter. Even on modern high pressure common rail systems. I've seen a brand new 5 series run fine with a lot more petrol in the tank than that.

I'm still going to take the car to a garage. While there is a good chance with topping the tank up it may run ok, I don't want to take the chance of trashing the engine.

Are there any devices that work to stop me being so draft in the future. I may try just taping the garage invoice to the filler cap as a reminder if there isn't.

You can buy 'diesel only' and 'petrol only' stickers to stick on the inside of your petrol tank opener. My brother recently got them because he runs both a diesel and a petrol car and in the past he once filled his diesel with petrol and had to pay to get the tank drained.

Great idea but after a while you'd probably stop looking at the sticker and complacency sets in.
