Well I got my upgrade today which and came home with the Samsung Omnia which i already love despite being incredibly confused about a lot of functions and programs.

One of the reasons i went for the Omnia was for the 16GB storage so it could replace my 4gb ipod which is already full. However I can't work out how to transfer music files to the 16gb storage area. Using active sync i've transfered 7 songs but they've gone onto the phone storage which unsurprisingly is now full (not letting me transfer anything more). So my question is how can i set it up so that music files automatically sync to the 16gb memory rather than the phone memory?

Cheers,
Alex

on vista it just shows up under my computer , both the phone part and the storage part

id expect the same for XP but maybe not

Ok I've worked out how to transfer files from "my music" to "my storage" on the handset itself. However this is slow and requires tediously cutting and pasting every song using file explorer.

Reply to above: My phone doesn't come up under my computer :s

very wierd

did you install windows mobile device centre off the cd with active sync ? on that if i click on file management it brings up 3 folders , one the 8gb storage , one the phone memory and one for bluetooth ftp

but it still comes up as a portable device in my computer too

My CD was bugged and would not respond every time i tried to run setup.exe so in the end i downloaded activesync off the Samsung support webpage.

I have the 8gig version and was under the impression that you could access EITHER the phone memory OR the 8gig storage. You need to go:

"Start > Settings > Connections > USB Connection Mode"

and choose which you want.

Hope that helps.

There is also a quicker way to do it as well (perhaps try this when you're a bit more familiar with it?), if you have the Samsung today thingy (with the Home - Settings - Quick dial selector at the top) move to "Settings" and touch "Settings" again so the pad lock is unlocked. Then you simply select "USB" and it will change. When "USB" is active your PC will see the 8gig storage. When it is not active it will "activesync" with your PC and you can only write to the phone's memory.

i never have it in usb mode and the 8gb always shows up in my computer as sdescribed above ! maybe its a firmaware thing, i really dont know

I've tried the USB connection thing and still nothing on My Computer.

However oddly i was using Windows Media Player (which is rare for me) and it automatically detected the phone (and more importantly directly the 16gb storage) and instantly synced my entire library!!!! So this was a brilliant if slightly lucky discovery :D

Now my next question is how to convert itunes purchased .m4a files to a format supported by windows media player.
