Going to Thailand tomorrow.

Went in June this year with family, great place though Bangkok itself wasn't really my cup of tea. The temples are truly astounding, Recling Buddha, Golden Buddha etc.

You have to visit Phi Phi Islands and see Maya bay, stunning! Had me in awe for the hour or so that we were there.

so how did you meet people out there? just chat to randoms?

Spark up random conversations with other travellers - it's easy once you've done it a few times. Lots of people are happy to talk about their lives and experiences and it can be a great way to gain confidence and meet people.

I did my best to meet the people in these countries, rather than just talk to people from the uk where the conversations generally seemed to be variations on the theme of "Oh gosh, aren't I brilliant for coming out here to this backward place, tralahaha"

Its why I wound up with friends from malaysia, singapore and vietnam, and a girlfriend from thailand.

Really? It is naturally beautiful, but it's become a horrible tourist trap, constantly full of boats and hundreds of people

Though Phi Phi was my favourite place, i went for 5 weeks to Thailand and stayed on Phi Phi for 2 weeks!

5 and a bit weeks later i'm home!! Had the best time ever, and despite the op, I only stayed in thailand for about 7 days.

Stayed in bangkok for a total of 3 days, which is far too small, then caught a bus down to koh phagnan. Stayed there for 3 days, and then travelled on to indonesia. Definetly going back to thailand, was there for far too short a time.

Ended up travelling down to banda aceh, and on to a small island called Pulau Weh, which i thought was just the most amazing place I have ever been. Here I did my PADI open water. Even got to do a wreck dive, and dove at some under water hot springs.

Had the best time ever, and am without out a doubt going to go back to that part of the world again.

Some Pictures. :D

Koh Phagnan again, hired out mopeds and drove around the island looking for places to snorkel, was awesome.

Pulau Weh. View from the hut i stayed in. Went out snorkelling from there every morning, then went diving during the afternoons.

I've already been, just got back yesterday. Went for 5 weeks, two of those where for my third year geography field trip, to the bornean rainforest. (550 quid) The rest of the time spent travelling around thailand and indonesia, very briefly. Flights cost around 800 quid, (flew 15 times in total), and spent another 900 quid on top of that.

Well worth it. Awesome experience without a doubt going again.

On the way back from New Zealand i'm spending 4 days in Bangkok.

Can you recommend things to do? I'm going to take a full day trip and do the River Kwai, war cemetary, tiger temple, etc all in one day outside of BKK.

I already know about the obvious ones such as the grand temple, etc. ANy must-do's or dont's?

DONT DO IT

I did exactly the same

River Kwai & War Cemetary & Tiger Temple - Kanchanaburi right?

River Kwai is incredibly boring
War Cemetary is just a cemetary in a town, nothing else, next to a busy road
Tiger temple is the worst thing ever. Absolutely rubbish animal park, and the tigers are drugged to hell and don't do anything. Nothing AT ALL to do for the few hours you're there.

Only good thing in Kanchanabury is the Erawon National Park and 7 tiered waterfall
