Have the cash for any one of theese two cards this week, few questions guys.
I game at 1920x1200, my current gts 512 just aint up to the job at this res. first off, is the 1gb version of the 4870 worth the extra money over the 512mb variant, which card runs the coolest and which overclocks better and what card would be more future proof what with new games like far cry2, crysis warhead etc. havent paid much attention to graphics cards lately so id appreciate any advice and opinions from users of both theese cards:)

I advise you wait a matter of weeks, the 55nm GTX is supposed to be Oct.

This GT212 or such all peeps go on about in 2009 is not the 55nm GTX.
is this the new gtx280+hc, the thing that would suit me is another nvidia card (im that used to the nvidia brand) and ease of use, call me a fan boy but ive been using nvidia cards since gf4 days and im so familiar with them, theyre like an old friend. ive been putting in a lot of hours at work lately and ive got some surplus cash, but id still like to spend it wisely:)

Id really like a high end nvidia card, due to financial constraints ive always had to go for the lesser gt/gts variants, could never afford gtx or ultra etc. done sli a few times, buy one card then wait a while till prices drop then add a second. in your opinion would my psu be ok for the more modern cards considering the rest of my setup, psu is a thermaltake toughpower 750w, 60amp single rail

PSU should cope, all the Dual/Triple/Quad rails is said to be a con as they mostly feed of 1 rail and even then some good brands now are back to 1 big strong rail.

I just replaced the psu recently, used to run an enermax noisetaker 600w, done me well with sli 6800gt's on 939 amd, and sli 7900gt's on my old 680i board (pos) and my last two 8 series gts cards, 640 and current 512gts. had that psu for three years without a blip, sad to say my wee bro has been through two quality psu's in the time i had the noisetaker.:)

If you are partial to Nvidia then get the 280 either in current form or in new 55nm guise. Anything else will just dissapoint you even if it doesn't really (if you get my drift) :)

In august the 55 shrik of the 280 was said by nvidia to be 3-4 months away so october sounds optimistic. If you have the leaning to go nvidia then the 280 as is now will probably do you just fine. As always look at the benchies see what games you play and which card they play better on at the res you want then decide. As for nvidia taking back the performance crown this year i don't see it happening they will get some extra performance out of the die shrink but ati has not yet enabled the sideport on the X2 which apparently gives it quite a performance boost i expect that to be enabled when nvidia release the die shrink.

There is no way that a GTX 280 is worth buying at the current price

You would have to be insane to pay £100 more than a 4870 to get the GTX280, its performance does not justify its current price.

4870 512MB / 1GB = easy winner here.

Get the above card as its a great price and tbh nvidia will probably release the new gtx280+ at a even higher price than the current one if its faster. Nvidia say they will take the performance crown back this year i don't think so as the new card will have to gain 30% in performance which imo opinion won't happen. 4870x2 will be the fastest card for a good while unless nvidia change there cards dramatically. Even 2 4850's whoop a gtx280 can't see it happening.
