How do the police expect to chase cars such as Impreza STis and Evos etc in the standard police cars such as Fiestas, Focus Saloons and Honda CRVs? I know most of it is down to team work...Forgive my ignorance. Surely, Thousands of people must get away from the police every day?

I also don't know why the police think V70s are the fastest cars in the world.... I was talking to the local bobby the other day and he said "you better be a good driver and be in a super car if you're trying to get away from our volvos". I am struggling to see how an estate car with ~190bhp which must weigh the heavy side of 2 tonnes could possibly compete with the mass produced Type R's, Sti's and RS models on the road today?

Please do not start a flame war. I just want to get some different perspectives. Also, if there are any police officers on this forum, i would like to hear their opinion too.

Thanks

depends if we're talking about general speeding past police cars or organised crime. I doubt there's thousands of instances like this. As far as im aware a lot of police motorway chase cars in some areas are scoobies and the like.

The volvo will probably reach the same sort of speeds that the crim will do, it'll only get there slowly and a lot of the time if its serious they get helicopter backup and you cant outrun one of those

we have some black X5's here and they are good for 170 or something like that ( so a bobby told me )

altho i do belive he is exagerating lol
130 maybe :P

Area cars and traffic cars aren't Fiestas, or CRVs, or Focuses, they're usually powerful Vectras, Volvos etc, plus most forces can also call on faster stuff again, but generally, they aren't needed.

Pursuits involving such cars aren't exactly every day, and ones involving people who can actually drive at a decent level are even less. Driver training makes up for a lot, and police class 1 drivers are about as good as you get. Then add in helicopters and most importantly, radios, and it becomes very difficult to get away.

I'd say it was very difficult to outrun the police, your best bet is to force them into calling off the chase.

Because you cant drive flat out everywhere.

And the places you can do, ie motorways they just get a helicopter/radio up the road.

Powerful Vectras? Do they use VXRs? What is the fastest car the UK police force currently have? am i right in thinking its the 2.0 Impreza WRX Sti?

A police station not far from me used to have an Escort Cosworth. (a few year ago obviously) but it got nicked from the compound...

The truth is, they only need a helicopter, and that can cover almost any situation. The fast cars they do have are only designed to reduce the need to call the chopper every time someone goes above 100.

They also use a bunch of cars, and call them in further up the road to join the pursuit, this means they can lay stinger strips or easily enforce rolling blocks. They don't do one-on-one chases all that much, they always call in other people to assist. As has also been said, they don't normally run a pursuit with the Focus/Fiesta etc. they use the Volvos, Vauxhalls, Subarus etc.

Yeah its the VXRs (2.8 v6 turbo I think). Humberside have an Evo or two.

TPAC course outline said:
Demonstrate the ability to deploy 'Stinger' tyre deflation systems on a moving vehicle on single carriageway/dual carriageway/motorway roads

Describe and understand the ability of firearms to penetrate motor vehicles

The police have a load of high speed pursuit cars for chasing people in fast cars. For example, Prodrive have set up a load of Subaru Impreza GB270s for the Essex Police.

Also, their high speed cars are tuned also.

I see loads of coppers in big BMW 5 series, Imprezas, Evos etc etc

This, and watching some of the police chase programmes on TV they usually try and avoid a pursuit. They gang up in marked and unmarked cars and do a quick block and stop manoeuver before the crims realise they are surrounded and about to be stopped.
