Can't wait to get one for uni, will be great for my course and then I'll be completely mac-based.
However, I just want to know if the Ati 2600 graphics chip is good enough or is it worth paying a little extra for the 8800?
Also, is the memory as easy to upgrade as the MacBook, and is it the same type of RAM that's available from overclockers?

Cheers guys

I would say the 8800 is worth it in the long run. If you can justify it within your budget, I definitely would.

The ram is easy to upgrade on the iMac, the hardest part is apparently pulling the black piece of plastic out to release the RAM slots. After that it's a case of popping them in - see youtube for plenty of videos on this.

And the ram that ships in the iMac is 800Mhz (6400) stuff, Overclockers only sell 667Mhz (5300).

Ah ok, I'm probs gonna get it with uni discount when I get down there on thursday, would there be much of a saving?

Prices for you :)

I'll be getting the top spec 24" one in a week or so.

Im awaiting delivery of the top spec one tommorow sometime (according to TNT anyway!). I chose that one based on the 8800 plus I added the 1TB hard drive and AppleCare.

Good enough for what? If you don't play games or do much 3D work, don't bother, it won't make a difference. If you're interested in gaming though, definitely get the 8800 because the 2600 won't perform well.

Justin, could you price me up the cheaper 24" with an added 8800 and a 500gb drive?
Thanks!

Yeh I think I may play COD4 in Windows and am doing some visual work on my course so would be good to have a fast graphics chip.

i have the 2.8 with the ati graphics and it more than copes with everything i throw at it, howaver cod4 is out for the mac soon and i have a feeling it's going to stumble.... a little...

i'll let you know how it goes.

(didn't get the 8800 as i wanted an n wireless router and a 1tb nas too and my budget wouldn't streach :( )

If it's anything like the PC version, it will probably perform surprisingly well. It's not exactly a graphical marvel though, compared to other games.
