How often does the 3rd stage of fans kick in on your console and what are doing for it to start?

I'm a little worried that this is happening when I'm simply watching PlayTV, making the noise cancel out the good points of it.

I think my console may be faulty.

If there are owners of any other models, please tell me when the 3rd stage kicks in on yours too.

Mine kicks in sooner than my mates, depends what its doing TBH, i guess its not as quiet as some but it still works, throws out heat so not faulty IMO. Some times for example playing Uncharted it will kick in after 20-30 or so mins depending on the room temp. Its not obtrusively loud and it dont bother me to be honest unlike some on here.

I'm not sure how loud stage 3 is?

If I have sat and watched a couple of Blu ray's and go to turn the ps3 of the,I can hear them but it's not loud.I have my 5.1 system going so all I can hear is film or game sound.

You may have seen my old thread, where i sent off a 40gig with a minor fault and recieved a replacement that would go into Stage 3 while upscaling a DVD or playing a game. I rang Sony to complain and they sent me another replacement that hasn't yet gone to stage 3 despite playing games for up to an hour.

60gigs are known to run hotter than 40s, but that does sound a little... off.

[EDIT] It's worth noting, that when i rang Sony they asked me to put the PS3 standing vertically as it typically increases the effectiveness of the heatsink - it wasn't until after i had done that and the fans were still spinning up that they issued a replacement. They also said the fans spinning up while playing games was normal, but it shouldn't do it while watching DVDs.

It happens a lot with mine, especially with the weather being warmer now also. It is bloody annoying when trying to watch a dvd.

Mine has always been vertical.

Mine kicks into 3rd stage fans after abou 1.5-2 hrs of watching a DVD but only when upscaling. Its never kicked in whilst playing a game. Its horizontal and in a media stand so doesnt cool as well as it could but i dont find the fans obtrusively loud especially with 5.1 surround on.

I've had three PS3's now all 60GB and only my first one was loud, when I had it sat horizontal inside a open front cabinet. The two since have sat vertical on the top of the cabinet and never go above stage 2 whether gaming or playing films.

Playing Conan recently on my mates 60GB I noticed his fans ramping up to stage 3 within 10 mins, which was annoying.

Mine level 3s within about 15 minutes of gaming. 60Gbs are a higher manufacturing process though so they run hotter. The 40Gbs and 80Gbs are a deffo a lot quieter on average as my mates doesnt even hit level 2. If you dont need BC just sell it on the bay (bit cheeky) and get an 80Gb as it will be quieter.

the PS3 has fans?........

never noticed A fan, never mind fans.

i've said it before about my 360, but i'll also say it now about my PS3....
who has the sound so low that you will notice fan noise? especially on PS3...

you mean theres never a point playing a game or watching a film where theres a quiet passage of audio?

I hear my fans constantly apart from when I just started the console.

I can stay on the XMB for ages but as soon (well, 5 mins in) as I start a game/video/playtv the fans start to ramp up

I'm gonna be honest and tell you what i would do, it isn't exactly a very moral act but it's what i would do none the less.

Sell it on a popular auction site, you should get a good price, maybe even enough to: buy a new 80gig. If you really don't care about BC you'll get your warranty renewed and probably won't have to spend much, especially if you chuck in a few games with the 60gig. By the sounds of it, it functions perfectly other than the noise levels so i imagine you'll get away with it.

Tbh, the noise is probably perfectly normal. I have moved my PS3 closer than it was before so that's most likely why I can hear it more but it still seems pretty loud.

I will swap it for an 80gb if anyone wants or even a 40gb model that's had a HDD upgrade...

actually, your right, i tell a lie:o .

there are quiet passages through out films and games, but i can honestly say that during those periods.... I've never noticed anything coming from PS3 and the very very rarely occasional disk access on my Elite.

I think it's quiet normal. I have recently moved my PS3 to a different room and I now sit a lot closer to it. I hear the fans a lot more than I used to, plus it's now on a shelf so doesn't have as much airflow as it used to so my fans go all the way up to full while playing games (not played a DVD on it since they bought in DiVX support!).

I am planning on selling mine on the bay as they go for over £300 and then I will buy a brand new 80GB as they are supposed to be a lot quieter.

Mine ramps up to 3 when playing games but will ramp down again between a couple of seconds/ minutes after finishing depending on the room temperature.

It's recording something now via PlayTV and is making about as much noise as idling on the xmb.
