OCUK bodybuilders, body weight exercise?

are you able to do single leg squats?
no they wont do much for mass, like any bw exercise, but damn they are excellent for core and balance.

Like with a lot of things I think there is a place for bodyweight exercises (great to do if you don't have access to equipment, want to try something a bit different etc) but if he is recommending them over all free weights exercises then I'm not so convinced. Some of what he says is (or should be) fairly obvious to anyone who has looked into bodybuilding such as the body wanting to grow evenly, other parts are perhaps less useful in that he seems to gloss over some of the issues but that might be dealt with in more depth in the book itself.

Haha, no single legs are a bit hardcore. But as you say it wont do anything for mass really.

Everyone who follows a balanced routine must do some bw exercises, chins and dips are a must imo.

I just cant agree with the whole body weight only angle. Especialy with reguards to bench pressing. I doubt you could build a big chest with push ups alone.

None of you know what you are talking about.

Bodyweight exercise is no different to any other. You can increase weight by adding weight vests.

See www.rosstraining.com and rethink.

I'm sorry but you might want to take that back. Some of the people who have posted in here have years worth of training experience.

Relying solely on bodyweight exercises is a pretty awful concept, otherwise more people would do it.

And, it's far easier to simply use a dipping/chins belt for adding more weight to them two movements.

Umm, bodyweight + vest != bodyweight.

Putting a weighted vest on is no different to sticking a barbell on your shoulders to squat or using some DBs to do bench press.

Any any big squatter to perform single leg squats, chances are most of them won't be able to ;)

BW excersises are superb for coordination, balance, strength and endurance, but from a solely vanity/mass point of view they aren't particularly beneficial. Although if you're recovering from injury or trying to bust a plateu I'd say they're well worth a go.

Oh, and some BW excersises performed on swiss balls or other unstable surfaces will really, really test bodybuilders, especially those who don't work core/balance much.

I'm also a big fan of body weight excersises because it's within the realms of our genetic design. That is to say, it's harder to injure yourself or work outside safe planes of motion. It's also far, far, far safer if you're looking to increase explosive ability, endurance or general anaerobic performance :)

Ant

You think those people above don't train with more then bodyweight? Wow you really are an idiot.

And I'd like to see you put 600lbs on your back and squat. I doubt you'd even get it off the rack, but then your probably just some skinny 150lb 25 year old trying to justify your pushup routine.

Can we post some professional atheletes who train using more than BW for comparison?

(other than those that you've posted already)

No, I’m not an idiot. I speak the truth. Not only will bodyweight gymnastic training build you a first class athletic physique, but also one that’s more capable of withstanding any athletic endeavour (above and beyond just posing in front of a pussy posing mirror).
