MATE this shot is amaiiiiiiiiiizing

any chance of a wallpaper?

Fabulous shots Gord.

I think I'll investigate joining one of the Aviation groups, it looks well worth it.

And I think Griffy deserves his own thread... Get them up griffy !

Great shots OP!

Were the Army sensitive at all to you taking pictures?

I know a Groundie who works on Chinooks and I was going to ask him if he could Jim'll Fix for me to pay a visit and hend down to take some shots but I wasn't sure what the security implications were.

Have a particular interest as I'm currently reading that book called Apache by Ed Macy and most of the Pilots faces are blacked out SAS style.

Cheers

Paul

Griffy those shots are awesome, especially the chinook landing, would be interested in having that as my background if possible?

Any history behind the shots? where/when were they taken?

Hey Paul,

The only thing they were sensitive about were photos showing the Apache's internals. A lot of the Apaches in the hangers were undergoing servicing so had a lot of the panels either open or removed.

This is a common restriction that all military forces apply to photographers (I've been asked by both the RAF and USAF not to photo aircrafts with panels open).

I'm sure you can work out why.

Photos of crews depend very much on who you are visiting. The USAF don't seem to mind being in photos and the RAF are find as long as the persons name isn't displayed.

The Army Air Corp, due to their involvement in Afghanistan, have decided not to release crew photos or names. I wasn't asked not to photograph the crews but I did self censor myself; I have two pictures on my site where I blured the persons face out. I did that because the person face was clearly visible.

The Chinooks are RAF assets, although there are Army and Navy personnel assigned to them. I would expect a groundie would get you on base with a visitor pass but how much access you would get to the flight line or hangers would depend on the persons rank. If you get the chance go for it!

Great photos.

My only comment would be that the shots of heli's in the air look too frozen; some more blur on the rotors would give a better sense of motion.

If you'd like to see the Apache in action try to get to the British Army Firepower demonstration thats held on the western end of Salisbury plain additionaly the rest of the Uk's weapons systems are there as well firing live ammunition, its a good day out and you need your ear defence (provided).

Cheers for the feedback.

I was shooting a between 1/200 and 1/250s @ 400mm handheld. I didn't want to risk going lower as I wouldn't get a second chance (these were the only two Apaches due in that afternoon).

The slow rotor speed because they were landing didn't help matters.

It's on my list to do!

I highly doubt that those are actually all griffy's photos. If you are indeed the official photographers for the RNLAF then I apologise it just seems a little odd that you're posting images that presumably you don't own in here. The exif of one of them is tagged with Koninklijke Luchtmacht which gives the game away.

Anyone know when the next one is being held?
